Seeing the continued need in our community the members of the Kingston-Frontenac Rotary Club have committed to help Lionhearts, a food security organization in our community, on a regular basis. After two years of pandemic restrictions and mostly meeting virtually, the members of our club were keen for any opportunities to be able to get together “in-person” and what better way to do this than while helping our community.

Food security has been an issue for years in Kingston, like in so many other communities, but the pandemic of the last two years has really emphasized the need to continue to help those in need in our community.

Lionhearts started as principally a food rescue organization in Kingston. Their initial focus was on collecting food and distributing it to the many food security providers in the city. But with the pandemic and the forced closure of many of the food security providers, Lionhearts started providing meals, initially in a park and then in some facilities. They have also been collecting and providing clothing and providing some warming centres during the cold months.

Our club recognized the good work done by Lionhearts from the start and we are proud to have been providing them with financial help in the last few years. But with our own need to get more involved directly with hands-on projects, we decided to help Lionhearts sorting and packing food and clothing once a month to replace our regular meeting every third week of the month.

We have also partnered with the Kingston Community Rotaract Club, who join us on this monthly project, which gives us a chance to get to know their members a little better as well. We have received excellent feedback from all participants and from Lionhearts on this community activity. As an additional bonus, we have a lot of fun doing it and it gives us a chance to catch up with each other in a casual and fun atmosphere.

I certainly encourage other clubs to get involved in some hands-on projects in their own community as it provides a great outlet for our members to help our neighbours directly.

Voyant le besoin continu dans notre communauté, les membres du Club Rotary de Kingston-Frontenac se sont engagés à aider régulièrement Lionhearts, un organisme de sécurité alimentaire de notre communauté. Après deux ans de restrictions liées à la pandémie et la plupart du temps de réunions virtuelles, les membres de notre club étaient désireux de pouvoir se réunir « en personne » et quelle meilleure façon de le faire que d’aider notre communauté.

La sécurité alimentaire est un problème depuis des années à Kingston, comme dans tant d’autres collectivités, mais la pandémie des deux dernières années a vraiment mis l’accent sur la nécessité de continuer à aider les personnes dans le besoin dans notre collectivité.

Lionhearts a commencé principalement comme une organisation de sauvetage alimentaire à Kingston. Leur objectif initial était de collecter de la nourriture et de la distribuer aux nombreux fournisseurs de sécurité alimentaire de la ville. Mais avec la pandémie et la fermeture forcée de nombreux fournisseurs de sécurité alimentaire, Lionhearts a commencé à fournir des repas, d’abord dans un parc, puis dans certaines installations. Ils ont également collecté et fourni des vêtements et fourni des centres de réchauffement pendant les mois froids.

Notre club a reconnu le bon travail accompli par Lionhearts depuis le début et nous sommes fiers de leur avoir fourni une aide financière au cours des dernières années. Mais avec notre propre besoin de nous impliquer davantage directement dans les projets pratiques, nous avons décidé d’aider Lionhearts à trier et à emballer la nourriture et les vêtements une fois par mois pour remplacer notre réunion régulière toutes les trois semaines du mois. Nous nous sommes également associés au Kingston Community Rotaract Club, qui se joint à nous pour ce projet mensuel, ce qui nous donne l’occasion de mieux connaître ses membres.

Nous avons reçu d’excellents commentaires de tous les participants et de Cœurs de Lion sur cette activité communautaire. En prime, nous avons beaucoup de plaisir à le faire et cela nous donne une chance de nous rattraper dans une atmosphère décontractée et amusante.

J’encourage certainement d’autres clubs à s’impliquer dans des projets pratiques dans leur propre communauté, car cela offre à nos membres un excellent moyen d’aider directement nos voisins.
