HERE IS ONE ROTARIAN'S FAVOURITE ROTARY MOMENT

A favourite Rotary Moment from Rotary Club of Coburg's Helen Lackey.

MEMBER SINCE: December 2015

A FAVOURITE ROTARY MOMENT:

I was on a Committee that brought a Syrian family to Cobourg and my very very favourite moment was driving to Pearson to bring this dear family to Cobourg. Mom and Dad and three children under six years of age. They had lived in a refugee camp in Turkey for five years and thinking about their arrival still brings tears to my eyes.

PERSONAL OUTCOME:

We have become very close - in fact, so close that Mom asked me to be in the birthing room when she delivered her 'Canadian' baby boy almost a year ago. Mom and Dad call me Momma and the children, Gramma.

There are many reasons why I love Rotary - meetings, organizing fundraising events and social activities and dinners, new friendships resulting from being involved in District events, i.e. District Conferences.

Just before Covid hit, I had organized a mental health series for Four Fridays in February - I have worked with Bill Wilkerson for about 12 years on mental health and he was a real cheerleader for this event. We invited members of the community to hear the speakers after our regular luncheon meeting and it was hugely successful. Planning another series for 2021 with an emphasis on mental health in the face of Covid19. It will probably have to be virtual.
