What is your club doing to Honour Indigenous People?
Please email Julie Dunaiskis (julie@eccgroup.ca) with a brief summary so we can post on the HIP website and provide an update in upcoming newsletters. This will help other clubs and provide a sense of how we are involved. We do not know the precise number of clubs across Canada who are involved in educational and awareness activities, however, our guess is we are close to 175 and growing. Some clubs were involved well before HIP, many on their own and some because of our encouragement and leadership.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR, CHRIS SNYDER:
Hello, All, She Kon
Every day we are seeing more and more Indigenous people being appointed to senior positions. One such appointment is Murray Sinclair as the new Chancellor of Queens.
However, to me, the most significant appointment as it relates to HIP is the decision to change our bylaws to appoint an Indigenous person as co-chair and unanimously elected Karen MacKenzie, a Cree/Metis woman from Edmonton as HIP's new Indigenous co-chair. Karen has been on HIP's board since 2019 and has made a huge contribution. The election of Karen as co-chair is a huge leap forward and further recognizes HIP to be a true partnership.
Karen runs several of her own businesses and sits on several important boards across the country. She was recently appointed as an "Expert Panel" member for the Canadian Centre for the Purpose of the Corporation (https://navltd.com/ccpc/#panelists), Senior Advisor to Navigator and Senior Advisor and Indigenous mentor at the Coady School at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.
Karen is also a past member of the Edmonton Police Commission and the Rotary Club of Edmonton.
As well as her leadership skills, she brings a true understanding of Indigenous needs, spirituality, love of the land and outdoors and Indigenous ways.
I look forward to being a co-chair with Karen.
I know I will learn a lot and together we will prove that 1 plus 1 makes 3. More importantly, this will help move HIP's vision and focus on education, awareness and understanding forward in a more meaningful way.

YOUTH-TO-YOUTH ENGAGEMENT (Y2Y):
Reconcili-Action noun: the act of relationship building and taking meaningful steps towards reconciliation. HIP has developed this initiative to support and guide future reconcili-action. This innovative program aims at empowering the next generation of leaders by uniting Indigenous and Non-Indigenous youth and inspiring them to take action towards creating sustainable environmental change. Each event is uniquely developed based on traditional teachings from the host territory. Events often take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop, generally 1 to 7 days in length. WILLIAMS TREATY TERRITORY. This three day programs will provide participants with traditional Indigenous teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers within the Williams Treaty Territory.
Recommended Education:
Indigenous Canada is a 12-lesson Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada. From an Indigenous perspective, this course explores key issues facing Indigenous peoples today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations. Topics for the 12 lessons include the fur trade and other exchange relationships, land claims and environmental impacts, legal systems and rights, political conflicts and alliances, Indigenous political activism, and contemporary Indigenous life, art and its expressions.

SEPT 30, 2021 - ORANGE SHIRT DAY - HIP is pleased to offer Orange shirts again this year. Order information will be coming early June so watch for details and get ready to order for your school, family, friends, Rotary clubs and other organizations to support Orange Shirt Day 2021! Orange Shirt Day (September 30th) is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and we can all learn more about the history of those schools. The "orange shirt" refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for the first day of school at St. Joseph's Mission residential school in BC but was taken away and never returned. Phyllis started to educate people about residential schools, the fight of racism and bullying. "Every Child Matters". This year, ADD YOUR CORPORATE LOGO!
