The City of Oshawa has given the Oshawa Rotary Club the nod to host the 2016 Oshawa Walk of Fame induction ceremony this fall and in the future.

“We are delighted to be carrying on this wonderful tradition of honouring citizens of Oshawa past and present who have made major contributions to our community and Canada,” says Rotary Club president Margaret Wallace.

A screen star, a pillar of the Oshawa business community and Canada’s top banker will receive a spot on the Oshawa Walk of Fame.

The 2016 inductees include Shirley Harmer who has appeared on both the big and small screen and served as host of her own CBC show; Oshawa business leader and philanthropist Stanley Lovell who was a second-generation owner of Lovell Drugs; and Stephen Poloz who has served as Governor of the Bank of Canada since 2013.

Poloz, who was born and raised in Oshawa said he was honoured to be inducted into the Oshawa Walk of Fame.

“My family has very deep roots in this city,” he said. “Growing up in a community that values hard work and service has been key to my success. I feel both privileged and humbled to be recognized by my hometown for my contributions to Canada and to the field of economics.”

In addition to his work at Ontario’s oldest independent drug chain, Stanley Lovell was involved with numerous community organizations including Durham College, the Lakeridge Health Oshawa Foundation and Scouts Canada.

He died in 2010, so his daughter spoke on behalf of the Lovell family.

“My family is very pleased and proud that dad is being honoured with an induction into Oshawa’s Walk of Fame,” said Diana Lovell Kirk.

Harmer, now a resident of Port Perry, began her career at the Jubilee Pavilion before hosting her own variety show on CBC in the 1950s and performing in films and television in Canada, Italy, Switzerland and the United States.

She said she was thrilled to be honoured by her hometown.
