From the district governor: Goodbye! It's been great!

Three and a half years ago, I was interviewed and named District 6420’s District Governor Nominee Designate. It’s been a terrific ride, and I thank you all.

As of July 1, 2016, Scott Shore will become our district governor. I wish Scott the very best. He is a good Rotarian and will be a wonderful governor.

I will become the IPDG. (That’s Immediate Past District Governor.)
The following year I will become Vice Governor.
Never seems to end, does it?

Serving as DG for our district has certainly been one of my proudest Rotary highlights.
Should you or someone in your club or Rotary friends have an interest in the role, please follow up by speaking with your club president and then any PDG in our District to let us know of your interest.

Qualifications include being a past president and having a love of service and Rotary. Interviews are held in late November ... and then the fun begins.

Help wanted: New Event Planning Committee
We are looking at forming an Event Planning Committee in our district.

We have a number of events throughout the year and are recognizing the need to have a committee of individuals who are skilled and enjoy doing event planning.

If you are interested, please contact DGE Scott Shore

This would be a fun way to get involved in district activities and bring some creativity to our events.

Tornado siren dedication in Fairdale: Proud to be part of a larger effort

David Dosier (left) and Jim Nelson of Rotary prepare to unveil the new sign on the Fairdale warning system tower.

Fairdale – About 20 people assembled at the tornado warning siren to recognize the funding organization, Rotary District 6420 and the Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary Club. David Dosier, president of the Kishwaukee club, delivered some short comments to a mix of Rotarians and Fairdale residents. His comments emphasized that while they were there to recognize the efforts of Rotary, they were simply one contributor among many.

Dosier stated “Rotary is only one of many service organizations that contributed, and continue to contribute, to the recovery efforts here in Fairdale. We are one of many who donated time, money or material goods – to help the residents of Fairdale get back on their feet and, in this case, have more resources at their disposal in the future. We are one of many who stepped up to help meet the needs of a community. So while the spotlight is on Rotary for these few minutes, let me emphasize that we are proud to be part of a much larger effort.”

The warning siren system and tower was funded by Rotary District 6420, which encompasses over 40 Rotary clubs in the northern Illinois region, west of Chicago. The project cost approximately $16,000. The Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary club served as the District’s agent in coordinating the project. Rotary District Governor, Jim Nelson, of Rockford, was on hand for the ceremony and unveiled the bronze sign that is now mounted on the tower, recognizing Rotary’s role in providing the siren system.

Thank you, one and all, for conference contributions
“Alone we can do so little: together we can do so much.” -- Helen Keller

We want to thank all the people who made the District Conference a success; their help, counsel and willingness made the event a great weekend for fellowship.

While only the most hardy and daring of Rotarians braved the cold for the Friday morning golf event, it was still a wonderful opportunity to play the beautiful Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club golf course. Thank you to Loves Park Rotarians Dr. Kris Tumilowicz and Tom Brooks for organizing the event.

The Friday night Foundation Dinner, highlighting Ambassadorial Scholar Jordan Groh, was attended by 52 Rotarians including spouses. This great evening included a cocktail reception to recognize all the Paul Harris Society members in the district. Thank you to Elise Cadigan (Rockford) and Claire Gierat (Belvidere) for organizing the evening, Lyn Allison (Rockford) for serving as event registrar and Leo Patterson (Dixon) for giving the invocation.

Sycamore, Kishwaukee Sunrise work together on Rotarians at Work Day

Rotarians from Sycamore and Kishwaukee Sunrise tend to weeds and flowers surrounding the entrance sign to Sycamore Lake at Rotary Park, one of four project sites for Rotarians at Work Day -- May 7.

About two dozen members of the Sycamore Rotary Club and the Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary joined forces May 7 to benefit local agencies through the annual Rotarians at Work Day event.

Rotarians volunteered their services to local not-for-profit agencies and special projects, lending their talents and their work to agencies in need of assistance with major tasks.

Among the projects we helped out with this year:

-- The Pay it Forward House had us prepare their Serenity Garden for the summer, spreading mulch on their flower beds.

-- The Sycamore Park District, as part of its own Park Pride Day, had Rotarians weeding and clearing around the sign at the entrance to Rotary Park at Sycamore Lake.

-- Rotarians helped prepare land near the historic Joiner Cemetery, for ceremonies to be held there on Memorial Day weekend.

-- The Kishwaukee Special Recreation Association had Rotary help plant its sensory gardens at Hopkins Park; clean and put into storage all the items they'll need in the Hopkins Park Shelter for summer camp; and prepare flyers for mailing.
