On Oct. 23, about two dozen Rotarians from District 6420 ventured into RI headquarters in Evanston for a tour,  lunch and the presentation of a $4,000 check for polio eradication.

The money was raised at the Ben Dover golf outing last September in Dixon. The Gates Foundation will match our check two to one, so we really donated $12,000. We were also joined by Rotarians from 6440 and 6450.

September 16, 2015: The epicenter of sixth worst earthquake in Chile was just 100 miles from Combarbalá.

Last month’s 8.3 magnitude earthquake impacted the lives of tens of thousands of Chileans, including the lives of Combarbalá, Chile, residents.
District 6420 sent a Vocational Training Team there for two weeks this past June.
The earthquake damaged schools, residences and businesses (including the hotel where the team stayed) and caused considerable emotional stress due to the 200-plus aftershocks.
District 6420 has invested much time, treasure and talent in the Combarbalá community thanks to the work of the Vocational Training Team and financial contributions from the Rotary Club of Galena, a Rotary International Global Grant and District Designated Funds. This enabled strong bonds to develop, grow and evolve. Bonds that are well worth building upon.
District 6420 has asked Combarbalá Rotarians how the District might marshall resources to be of help as the community recovers from the earthquake. Combarbalá Rotarians appreciated our offer and suggested that the most meaningful help is continuing the work which the Vocational Training Team started. This help involves bringing Combarbalá teachers of English to District 6420 in order to enhance their English teaching skills by observing classrooms within the district and speaking with native English speakers.

NEW YORK, Oct. 23 — On the heels of historic success against polio in Nigeria and across the continent of Africa, the global effort to end polio is receiving an additional $40.4 million boost from Rotary to support immunization activities and  surveillance spearheaded by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Polio is on track to become the second human disease ever to be eliminated from the world (smallpox is the first). To date, Rotary has helped 194 countries stop the transmission of polio through the mass immunization of children. Rotary’s new funding commitment, announced in advance of the Oct. 24 observance of World Polio Day 2015, targets countries where children remain at risk of contracting this incurable, but vaccine-preventable, disease.

“We are in the final push to end polio, but as long as the disease exists anywhere in the world, all children are at risk,” said Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee Chair Michael McGovern. “With just two endemic countries remaining – Pakistan and Afghanistan –we must continue to raise awareness and funds needed to end this paralyzing disease. Our grants show Rotary’s commitment to staying the course until we wipe out polio forever.”

EVANSTON, Oct. 19 — Rotary will honor six women – all members of Rotary clubs across the globe – at its “Rotary Day at the United Nations” event on Nov. 7.  Rotary’s ‘Global Women of Action’ will be recognized for donating their time, talents and expertise towards helping thousands of people in need throughout the world.

Since the volunteer service organization’s founding more than 100 years ago, Rotary has harnessed the strength of professional and community leaders to tackle humanitarian challenges at home and abroad. Today, Rotary provides a platform for successful men and women of all ethnicities, faiths and cultures to make the world a better place through volunteer service.

“Every day at Rotary I see first-hand how our members work to change lives and make significant impact around the world,” said Rotary International President K.R.  Ravindran.  “Through hard work, dedication and selflessness, Rotary’s ‘Global Woman of Action’ embody Rotary’s motto, ‘Service Above Self’, and I extend my warmest congratulations to them for their outstanding service to humanity.”
