The Rotary Club of Savanna’s “Service Above Self” Award is presented annually to the resident of the Savanna area who most exemplifies the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self.” This individual must have contributed to the betterment of the Savanna area by the unselfish giving of their talents, time, and energy to help improve the quality of life for people of the Savanna community.

Juliene McCormick was selected by our committee as this year’s recipient of the “Service Above Self” award.  Juliene is a retired teacher from the Savanna and West Carroll School District where she initiated the yearly Science Fair and was involved in the 321 Reading Group which encourages a link between school & community with author visits. Juliene raised her 3 children here in Savanna.  Even though she is retired she can still be seen at the school volunteering in the classrooms of her 2 grandchildren that attend West Carroll.  Outside of her teaching career, Juliene has been active with the beautification to Main Street with the “adopt a pot” project initiated by the Savanna Service Club in which she is a member. She is also part of the team that helped to create Val’s Memorial Garden in memory of a former 1st grade student, Val Johnson.  Juliene is also a member of the Savanna Historical Society Board of Directors, in which she has played a key role with fundraising.  She has joined other musicians to give concerts at the museum to raise funds for projects.   Juliene has always been active with her church’s music ministries and 25 years ago she founded the “New Spirit Band” involving local talents of all ages.  This band started out performing at their own church, but now travels to other churches and venues to share their music ministry.
