C. Robert (Bob) Clarke (Joanne) - Deceased
District 500 (Hawaii) Governor, 1975-1976
International President: Ernesto Imbassahy de Mello
International Theme: To Dignify the Human Being
Bob was born and raised in Hawaii and he attended Punahou School, noted as the oldest high school west of the Mississippi. He served in WW11 with the 19th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 7th Air Force in the Pacific. At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor he lived with his parents and brothers in their home overlooking Pearl Harbor from where he viewed the entire attack.
After discharge from the service in 1946 he attended the College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific) in Stockton, CA where he met his wife, Joanne. Bob graduated in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering and he and Joanne married shortly after that. He returned to Hawaii with his bride to work for his father in the construction materials business. Upon the death of his father in 1956, Bob became President of the company and managed the business until its sale in 1959 to Pacific Cement and Aggregates of San Francisco. Upon leaving the company in 1964, he purchased Surfside Hawaii, Inc., at the time a distributor for. Capitol Records. He eventually formed his own recording company, purchased a chain of retail music stores, became involved with numerous business investments until he and Joanne moved to California as part-time residents in 1990. He currently maintains a 12 acre grape vineyard in Shingle Springs, CA. and continues distribution of his record labels of Hawaiian music.
Bob joined the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor in 1957 and became its president during 1961-62. During 1975-76 he was District Governor of D500, the State of Hawaii. This was the Rotary year, and the only year, that the Rotary Club of Tahiti was assigned to D500. He has served on a number of RI committees as well as District Rotary Foundation chair and chair of several zone institutes. He transferred to the Rotary Club of Cameron Park in 1990.
One of Bob's cherished experiences was serving on the Board of Regents of the University of the Pacific for 30 years. During that period of time RIPP Stan McCaffrey became President of the university and RIPP Cliff Dochterman followed him shortly afterwards as VP of Development.
Bob is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a Major Donor of the Rotary Foundation. Joanne is a Paul Harris Fellow as are all four of his children, Carolee, Rick, Debbie and Gary. Gary is a member of the San Ramon Valley Rotary Club and he will be the club president during 2011-12."
