This is Basic Education and Literacy Month on the Rotary calendar and there are so many Clubs who are contributing to positive outcomes in this area.  Just some examples are Reading in Schools, Dictionaries in Schools, Chromebooks for school children, IT support for lower decile schools in New Zealand, University scholarships in Cambodia, books sent to Pacific Island Schools and much more.

Denise and I have both benefited from access to a good education system, which has opened up many other opportunities.  I remember receiving a scholarship from a local trust while at secondary school and, being the eldest of seven children, this was a great help at that time to me and my parents.
Some people in our communities here and overseas are not as fortunate in being able to access education or achieve good educational outcomes.  Poor education and low literacy levels impact on people’s ability to gain meaningful employment, to maintain their health, to enjoy the world’s literature and arts, to discover ways of improving people’s lives and to understand other cultures.  Education and literacy are key to economic development, community welfare and peace.

Following Cyclone Winston in Fiji, Rotarians are helping rebuild the homes of teachers so they can remain teaching at local schools.  The SHINE literacy project, supported by Rotarians, reaches out to 17 primary schools in Porirua so that every child, regardless of their ethnicity or family circumstances, can achieve success in reading and writing at a very young age.
There are so many opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives through education and literacy and I congratulate Rotarians for the difference you are making in people’s lives.
