Congratulations to Doug and Sharon Ziegler

R. Douglas Ziegler is a member of the Rotary Club of West Bend. He and his wife, Sharon, truly exemplify the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self."  We thank them for their generosity and inspiration.  It is an honor for us to share their story below...

When it comes to local philanthropy, Doug Ziegler has long stood tall in our community.  As co-chair of Cedar Community's Moments to Remember philanthropy campaign, Doug received the 2014 Todd Wehr Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year Award from the Association of Fund Raising Professionals (AFP) Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter.  Cedar Community, together with the Blood Center of Wisconsin and United Way of Washington County, nominated him for the award.

Cedar Community also nominated Doug for the Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year award from the International AFP, and he accepted the award in Washington D.C. on November 15, 2014.  This is an extraordinary achievement:  The International AFP represents more than 30,000 members in 235 chapters throughout the world, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs.  Doug is the first Wisconsin resident to receive it.
For more than 60 years, Doug has served on 40-plus corporate and non-profit Boards.  Doug estimates he has helped raise $30-$40 million in the course of his volunteer fundraising career.  "He's persuasive because he asks sincerely," said Amy Johnson, Cedar Community Director of Philanthropy,"--from the heart.  If Doug is on your team, the work will get done, in record time and with record results.  He has championed many charitable causes and, in some cases, single-handedly ensured their fundraising success.  It is for his passion, tenacity and vision that we nominated him for this prestigious award."
Doug began public service in 1954 as an Alderman for the City of West Bend, and served the West Bend Community Chest, an extension of the United Way, from 1957-1967 (Drive Chair in 1965).  Doug and his wife, Sharon, co-chaired the United Way of Washington County drive in 1997 - the first year the organization hit the $1 million mark.  He continues to serve the United Way of Washington County, where today, at age 87, he chairs yet another fund drive.
In 2001, Doug became chair of Cedar Community's first major fundraising campaign, Nurturing a Vision, raising $3.1 million (exceeding the $3 million goal).  In 2004, he joined Cedar Community Foundation.  In 2013, Doug again took the helm as honorary co-chair, with Sharon, for Cedar Community's Moments to Remember campaign to raise $3.7 million for programs at their new memory care facility, the Cottages at Cedar Run.
To further honor Doug's accomplishments, the Cedar Community Foundation is asking for support from foundations, businesses and individuals to name the courtyard at the Cottages at Cedar Run "the R. Douglas Ziegler Courtyard."  The goal is to raise $500,000 toward this initiative, which would also exceed the Moments to Remember goal of $3.7 million.  (contact Amy Johnson at 262-338-2819 or email ajohnson@cedarcommunity.org)
