Vocational and Community Service Awards.

At a recent awards evening a  Rotary Community Service awards was given to the Weston Creek Walk-in Centre for their work during the early months of the COVID-19 Health Emergency in the ACT.

Kirsty Cummin responded by describing what the Rotary award meant to the Walk-in Centre’s staff, many of whom had benefited from the club's Coffee Shout project.  The Coffee Shout was a way of demonstrating appreciation for the work frontline healthcare staff were doing to protect the Canberra community. The club funded coffee vouchers at three local cafes and contributed the balance of the cost to help keep the healthcare workers energy and morale up.  A secondary benefit was that it helped keep the cafes going during the quiet period of the COVID-19 stay-at-home period, and helped allay concerns that the healthcare workers would spread the virus.

RC of Canberra Weston Creek - Vocational and Community Service Awards.

On 21 June, eight Vocational and Community Service Awards were presented by ACT Minister Rebecca Vassarotti at a function held by the Rotary Club of Canberra Western Creek. One award was presented to Kristy Cummin, the manager of the Weston Creek Walk-in Centre.

The club funded coffee vouchers and three cafes - Lava, Sakheenas and That Gelato Place - contributed the balance of the cost to help keep the healthcare workers energy and morale up.  A secondary benefit was that it helped keep the cafes going during the quiet period of the COVID-19 stay-at-home period, and helped allay concerns that the healthcare workers would spread the virus.

Kirsty described how the Coffee Shout helped her team have a little quality downtime in their short breaks during long and relentless shifts. Many of the healthcare staff were in full PPE for many hours a day as they undertook a huge COVID-19 testing programme
So appreciative of the support were the Walk-in-Centre staff that one of them  - something of an artist - produced a painting that captured their thankful feelings towards Rotary.

Lastly, our youngest member, James Ellis, often brings his daughter Amelia with him to dinner nights.    So frequently has Amelia come along that we decided she should have a club badge of her own.  Possibly we will recruit her one day.
