District 9705 Grant - Update
Rotary Peace Fellow, Emily Nabakooza has been hard at work using a second District 9705 Grant to restore a very under resourced mixed primary school in her area of Uganda. A fit for purpose pit latrine has been built and classrooms made watertight and useable again. With the funding provided by D9705 this renovation has lifted the educational and health prospects of some rural Ugandan children. Read more for further information from Emily.

At the core of Assisi Centre’s interventions, lies a commitment to assist children in marginalized communities to learn through a quality education - by alleviating obstacles they face. With funds from the Rotary District 9705 and donations from the Rotary Club of Canberra, we are beyond grateful and pleased to be helping more than 650 pupils at Bukulula Mixed Primary School in Kalungu district, Uganda, learn from an improved, acceptable and decent school environment - through renovation of classroom blocks, and construction of an improved sanitation structure.

“We are very excited! It will be very nice to learn from a classroom with windows and a new blackboard” says 10-year-old Pamela. “Most of our children come here really motivated to learn and our enrolment figures have gone high since Assisi Centre introduced free meals to our school. The blocks undergoing renovation will be an excellent additional learning space for our children. Thank you, Rotary!” says Sr. Annet Mary, the school’s head teacher. From the perspective of a parent, we also wish to highlight what this change would mean to the school children. “A new latrine structure was one of our most urgent needs. We constantly worried about the safety of our children because the boy’s pit latrine especially, was in its worst condition. Thank you, Assisi Centre and Rotary, for addressing this concern and for restoring joy to our children.” Robert Kayondo, parent and community leader.
