August is Membership and Extension Month. Our first thought may be to focus on recruiting new members, which is important. However, it is just as important to focus on our current members. Do you have members of your club who have not attended the meetings lately? Pick up the phone and touch base with that Rotarian. Invite them for a cup of coffee or tea to catch up and find out how things are going for your fellow Rotarian.

Do you have a new member in your club? Invite them to coffee or lunch just to get to know them and learn all about who they are.

Is there a member of your club that you think deserves the esteemed “Service Above Self Award” that Rotary International awards to Rotarians around the world each year? Now is the time to nominate them. The nomination form is on Rotary.org. It must be signed by me and submitted before September 1. Arvid Punkin a member of the Tacoma Club was awarded this award this last year for his extensive efforts to bring clean water to the citizens of his native country in India. He definitely was a worthy recipient. “Service Above Self” can also be all about service right here in our own district and your community.

Rotary is all about service but at the end of the day Rotary is really all about its members. We are neighbors, community leaders and global citizens uniting for the common good. We unite people from all continents, cultures and occupations. It is truly one of our greatest strengths.

We have diverse perspectives that help us to see problems differently and help us solve them in our community and communities throughout the world.
