Fellowship – The Fifth Element of the Four Way Test

Fellowship is one of the most important elements of Rotary membership.  Whether at club meetings or at events, the camaraderie enjoyed by all helps create a vibrant, active club.

During my year as District Governor, I have seen many examples of fellowship activities that truly strengthen the bond between club members and attract others to join.
Quality weekly club meetings are the major avenue for building better friendships. Many clubs have added an unofficial fifth question to the four way test when it is being recited at their meetings:

“ARE WE HAVING FUN”

When meetings are fun as well as meaningful, the quality of Rotary membership increases. The wonderful atmosphere that pervades so many club meetings ensures good fellowship between all the members and also guests attending the meetings.

Another excellent example of fellowship that I have seen many times takes place with “hands on” activities. The Rotary Club of Colwood worked together to create a Picnic Playground in their community. I joined them for the ribbon cutting that opened the facility (photo above).

When members are involved with projects where they all work together, they really do have fun and also achieve a great feeling of accomplishment. There are many different kinds of hands on events from building facilities in another country to sponsoring a fundraiser to reading to elementary school children at the local school.

Attending other club meetings, district events and the annual District Leadership Training Assembly gives members the opportunity to expand their friendships in Rotary.

Attendance at the annual conference is absolutely the best way to enjoy the fellowship of Rotary. We look forward to fellowship with all district members at the annual conference in Nanaimo, June 19th to 21st.

This is my last newsletter as your District Governor, and I certainly want to thank all our Rotary clubs and all our Rotary members for the tremendous fellowship that I have enjoyed throughout the year while visiting you. I will miss that very much but will try to keep in touch in the future.

I am sure that you will welcome District Governor Rose Bowman (pictured with RI President Elect Ravi Ravindran at PETS in March) and Leon with the same warmth that you gave me.
Thank you for your kind hospitality for the past 12 months. Cheers!
