An open note… from District Governor Craig… to returning Rotary Youth Exchange Students and Family members gathered in Seabeck, Washington.

I still remember the nervousness during district interviews, the excitement during Outbound Orientation… and the mixed emotions as you left your homes and families for your remarkable year.   The writer Tennyson says, “I am a part of all that I have met” – In short I know that you have returned with experiences and the best parts of so many you met during your year – and I am confident there are many who will never forget you or their shared experiences.  You have left parts of yourself wherever you have been – the best parts!

Please know that we are so proud of you.   You are indeed our future – As Rotarians it is a gift to share your lives and potential as you envision the world you wish to create.  You are intelligent, independent, creative, confident, and talented.   You are our greatest hope.   As District Governor I am urging every Rotary club to explore ways of extending support for our incredible youth programs.   What drew me to Rotary was Rotary Youth Exchange. Our clubs help build literacy and skills, feed the hungry, and develop future leaders through  Student of the Month programs, Interact, Rotaract, and RYLA. Yet Rotary Youth Exchange is truly one of our best means of promoting world peace.   When you return from Denmark, or Taiwan, or Brazil… you have been privileged to share a different culture, beliefs, and world view.   Through your stories and actions you have taught others in the world what a kind, caring, enthusiastic, and curious people we Americans and Canadians can be.   Now you will return to plant the seeds of a better world.

Thank you for giving your time and talent to a Rotary Youth Exchange year.  Perhaps you too will be a Rotarian some day.  Please know how proud we are as a district to support you.    You will clearly “be the inspiration” to many!

A bright future awaits----enjoy!

District Governor, Craig Gillis
