POLIO NEWS...SURVIVORS & WINNING THE WAR

David Talbot sent me this photo of himself with polio survivors in Uganda. As you can see, several are young adults.  It’s not that long ago that there were active cases of wild polio in Africa, but they have nearly reached the 3-year mark of having no identified cases of paralysis caused by the wild polio virus. (3 years will be September 2019).

Donations to Polio Plus from our district through 03.31.2019 have totaled $120,728.  Thank you.  We know several Club treasurers wait to end of year to submit their contributions, so we are hopeful that we will reach or exceed $135,000 this Rotary year.  A shout out to the Longmont Rotary Club who has scheduled a multi-week series of events in April to raise awareness of the need for polio eradication and raise money for Polio Plus.  April has special significance in the history of polio because the first widespread trials of the Salk vaccine and the subsequent public release of the inactivated polio vaccine both happened in April; 1954 and 1955 respectively.
