Local Rotary Clubs Kick-Off Peaceful Schools Program!

October is Conflict Resolution Month and Rotary and Interact Clubs are rolling out the Peaceful Schools Program in local schools to promote constructive problem solving and support the healthy social and emotional development of our children.  Formed in April 2013, the Peaceful Schools Partnership is a collaboration between Rotary District 5450, The Conflict Center and Operation Respect.  This partnership is designed to support local schools in creating and maintaining safe and respectful learning environments by working with teachers and students to modify the perceptions, attitudes and behaviors that often lead to ridicule, bullying and other forms of physical, verbal and emotional violence. The program is multi-dimensional and designed specifically to be delivered in elementary schools by Rotarians and Interact students equipped with the appropriate tools, training, and support.

Bullying in schools continues to be a major and growing concern.  While Colorado HB 1254 requires all schools to adopt a plan for maintaining a “safe” school environment, and many schools have implemented programming aimed at this, many have also indicated that they need and want more help.  They recognize the resources that Rotary Clubs can provide and are excited about partnering with local clubs through the Peaceful Schools Program.

The Peaceful Schools Program was piloted in three local elementary schools in Denver and Douglas County last spring. The pilots were enormously successful, with both teachers and principals reporting that their students loved the program, referred to the lessons and activities often, and even modified some behaviors.  Not only are all three of these schools continuing the program this fall, the Peaceful Schools Program is further expanding into schools in Broomfield, Boulder, Aurora, Parker, Cherry Creek and other Douglas County schools.

Peaceful Schools is an exciting and rewarding new program for your Rotary or Interact Club.  Become a CHAMPION of the Peaceful School Program TODAY!  A training will be held for Club Champions at The Conflict Center on Wednesday, October 22 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.  For more information and to learn how to implement the Peaceful Schools Program in your club, please contact Carole Baumbusch (cbaumbusch@q.com or 303-868-6244) or Gail Lehrmann (glehrmann@aol.com or (303) 250-0024.)
