5. Letter from John Hewko

Dear Rotary and Rotaract leaders,

I have been impressed and moved by how members around the world are responding to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. The generosity of our donors, combined with the dedicated service of our members, has helped many who need shelter, food, water, and medicine. Districts and clubs like yours are organizing service projects and districts are using Rotary Foundation disaster response grants to help people affected by the war. We want to showcase your meaningful work.

Rotary Showcase

We invite you to share your efforts on Rotary Showcase if you haven’t done so already. We know that Rotary and Rotaract clubs are taking action, and we want to know how your club is helping. Did you know that you can use Rotary Showcase to find funding, volunteers, materials, and partners?

Here are a few of the many projects around the world so far:
•    European Rotaract clubs organize to help Ukrainian refugees
•    Rotary clubs unite across continents to collect and deliver medical aid to Ukraine
•    Rotary’s network enables rapid humanitarian relief for Ukrainian refugees

Now we want to hear from you. Use Rotary Showcase to tell us and others about the good work you club is doing to respond to the war in Ukraine, whether it’s through disaster response grants or by using locally donated funds or supplies.

Locally supported efforts

If your club or district is helping Ukraine without using a disaster response grant, post it on Showcase but also please send a very brief summary of those efforts, mentioning the monetary value of any donated funds or in-kind contributions, to Marco Nicosia in Rotary’s office in Zurich: marco.nicosia@rotary.org

Rotaract participation in disaster response grants

People have asked whether Rotaract clubs can participate in disaster response grants. Districts can apply for these grants, and we encourage Rotaract clubs and Rotaractors to take part in district efforts to help Ukraine, whether or not it’s through disaster response grants. And we encourage districts to include ideas proposed by Rotaractors in their disaster response grant projects.

Thank you for helping us obtain a more accurate global picture of all of the work that Rotary members are doing for Ukraine. Thank you for your leadership and dedication to Doing Good in the World in these times of crisis.

Sincerely,

John P. Hewko
