The Rotary Club of Frankston members put their best feet forward in the inaugural Melbourne Coastrek last November, raising more than $7000 for The Fred Hollows Foundation’s work restoring sight to the needlessly blind.  Their participation continues a long tradition of support for The Foundation’s work.
Rotary International recognised the work of Professor Fred Hollows, awarding him a posthumous Rotary Award for World Understanding in 1993. This award was accepted by Fred’s wife Gabi and included a cheque for US$100,000 which was one of the first major donations to allow Fred’s legacy, The Fred Hollows Foundation, to get on its feet.
The Fred Hollows Foundation continues to strive towards its vision of a world where no person is needlessly blind and Indigenous Australians exercise their right to good health. Rotary Clubs and Districts have been great supporters of The Fred Hollows Foundation’s work during the past 24 years which has included restoring sight to more than two million people in more than 25 countries.

After six years of successful Sydney Coastrek trekking challenges raising more than $9m for The Foundation, in November 2015, the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria played host to the inaugural Melbourne Coastrek.  Coastrek is a team trekking challenge where teams of four, including at least two women, trek either 30km or 60km, between Cape Schanck and Point Nepean, gaining fitness and having fun, while raising money to restore sight. Melbourne Coastrek 2015 raised more than $1.2m towards The Foundation’s work. Integral to the success of the Melbourne Coastrek were the teams of volunteers who help run the event together with the team at the Wild Women on Top. It was invaluable to have the participation of the Rotary Clubs of Frankston, Mount Eliza and Sorrento, as trekkers and as volunteers.
This year’s Melbourne Coastrek will be on Friday 18th November and we invite Rotary members from across the Mornington Peninsula and beyond to make up a team and trek or take on a shift or two as a volunteer on the day. You’ll be doing it for Fred - helping The Fred Hollows Foundation continue Fred’s legacy of restoring sight to the needlessly blind.
