Rotarian Ian Sayers was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Awards.
Ian was born in Williamstown, Victoria, on 28 October 1935.  He grew up in Northbridge, NSW,  and was educated at Northbridge Primary School and North Sydney Boys’ High School.   He worked for a few years in a bank, and also served in the ADF for 20 years both as a reservist and regular soldier.  
He served in various Reserve infantry units and Divisional Headquarters.  He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration in 1968 and retired a Major in 1973.
His first Rotary club was the Rotary Club of Canberra City.  He then transferred to the Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise, of which he was a Charter Member, Charter Secretary, and President in 1998/99.  
He was Governor of District 9710 in 2002/2003.   He was a member of the National Rotarians Against Malaria Committee from 2006 and National Chairman Jul 2010 to June 2013.  Over the years he was Chair of various District Committees in District 9710 – Literacy, Rotarians Against Malaria, Literacy and Group Study Exchange…
Currently Ian is a Charter Member of the Rotary E-Club of Latitude 38 and the club’s Secretary/Treasurer.
Outside of Rotary Ian is President of the RSL’s Belconnen Sub Branch and Deputy President of the RSL ACT Branch, Secretary/Treasurer of the ACT Reserve Forces Day Council.  He is a guide at the National Arboretum Canberra, both generally, and also in the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection.
