Did you know it took 78 years for Rotary to accept women members?
That's correct, it took until 1989 when RI constitutional change was made at the Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for Rotary.
In 1911 women only clubs existed in Minneapolis and in Minnesota alongside the men's club. Then, in 1918, the RI Board changed the constitution to state that Rotary membership was for "males only".
In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The issue went all the way to the The United States Supreme Court in 1987 and women were finally allowed to become Rotarians.
In 2020, the percentage of women in Rotary worldwide is 23%.
