GLOBAL GRANT UPDATE:
Congratulations to PDG Meena Patel for receiving approval for a $38,496 Rotary Grant for Oholi, India, to create an Agriculture Equipment Bank to assist farmers cultivating land. Oholi is the site of our past grant providing a well to reduce the need of women of the community to climb a hill multiple times a day to retrieve water. The freed time should assist in improving life for the whole community. Thank you to Plain Township, Niles, Salem, Jackson, and Boardman for your generosity in supporting this grant.
The District Rotary Foundation Committee has approved District Funds (DDF) for two Global Grants in India. Dr. Mena Patel <durdarshan19@gmail.com> is submitting the following projects. If your Club or individual members wish to support one or both of these projects, we have made it easier this year. Please mail a check made out to the Rotary Foundation to my address below. I will hold the check and submit it at the appropriate time when the Global Grant has been approved thus reducing your burden to participate.
I hope all Clubs will support one or many of our Global Grants this year.
Ophthalmic Equipment for the Rotary Eye & ENT Hospital in Kashmir, India - The Rotary Club of Udhampur, India, is working with the Diabetic Retinopathy Centre to improve eyecare. The hospital was established in 2000 by a Rotary grant and has treated more than 11,000 poor people suffering from eye ailments. Our District supported the Diabetic Retinopathy center a few years ago. The requested equipment will assist in diagnosing diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and provide vision correction information for patients without touching the eyes which is important for children. People travel almost 500 km distance for these screening tests.
Mobile Children Day Centers (Creches) at construction sites in Pune, India – The Pune region of India has been experiencing a population explosion which includes a construction boon. The large population of construction workers and their families are constantly on the move from one construction site to another. Wages barely support an underprivileged life putting families are under tremendous stress. Children are exposed to unhealthy surroundings, lack of education, filthy toilets, rooms infested with rats and snakes at the construction sites. Our Grant would help support the over 2000 marginalized children which are being looked after each year using Mobile Day Care facilities provided by Tara Mobile Creches Pune which has expertise in the field of Childcare and Child Development.
