On Saturday, April 21st at the Rotary Club of Bedford’s 6th annual Meals For Kids event, Bedford will reach an amazing milestone: 320,000 meals packaged for hungry kids in developing countries. To enable the meal packaging event, which will be held at Middlesex Community College, the club is in the process of raising $17,000 with major corporate support from BAE Systems and Anika Therapeutics. Support from smaller local businesses and individuals will also help, and the club is also seeking volunteers to join the fun of the packaging event itself.
The meals packed at the event are distributed primarily to school feeding programs in developing countries through Rise Against Hunger, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating hunger in our lifetime. A major goal of this event and thousands like it is to encourage parents to send their children to school. To escape the cycle of poverty, history has shown that a country must achieve at least a 40% literacy rate. Rise Against Hunger meals provide more than nourishment. They also provide a powerful incentive for children to stay in school.
It’s not too late to sign up to donate 2 hours of your time to experience this high-energy, fun event for people of all ages and abilities! The event features two packaging sessions; one from 9:00 – 11:00 AM and one from 12:00 – 2:00 PM. Feel free, too, to visit to explore whether your club might want to host your own packaging event.
