District Conference to Focus on Hunger!

During my District Governor year
we will shine the spotlight on eliminating hunger
locally, and around the world.

Over the next few months, look for opportunities to join with another nearby club for a joint effort to provide meals to the hungry - a great opportunity to expand the reach!

...and then on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at my District Conference, we are planning a combined event of providing food for local food programs and a program in partnership with Stop Hunger Now.

We will be asking Rotarians and non-Rotarian volunteers to participate in a Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event where we plan to package 150,000 meals.

As an example of how Stop Hunger Now responds to disasters, the organization has already shipped 1.6 million meals to the typhoon-ravaged Philippines.

The Stop Hunger Now meal packaging program gives volunteers an opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated, engaged advocates for the world’s poor and hungry. Its volunteer-based program coordinates the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals at the cost of $0.25/meal.

In the meantime, to help you learn more about Stop Hunger Now, its mission and the volunteer packaging program, Mrs. Lee Warren, Community Relations Manager and Rotary Liaison for Stop Hunger Now, will travel from Virginia to the District to make club presentations during the weeks of January 13 – 17 and February 10 – 14. We want to maximize the number of visits during each selected week. In addition to club visits, if you have a potential corporate or faith-based partner for her to meet, please let Lee know.

If you wish to have Lee give a program at your club, please contact her at lwarren@stophungernow.org or 434.738.2777 by 12/20/13 to set up your appointment. The final determination of whether she comes to District 7910 will depend on club interest.

Stop Hunger Now is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The organization is driven by a vision of a world without hunger and a mission to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-saving aid to the world's most vulnerable. In an effort to respond to emergency needs around the world, Stop Hunger Now receives and distributes significant donations of in-kind aid. These donations are large quantities of food, medicines, medical supplies and other such items as may be of use in fighting hunger and providing relief in a crisis.
