At the end of a recent Climate presentation to a large Rotary club in a conservative part of the USA, one of the few questions asked was “Why should we do anything when our government is indecisive and India and China are not doing anything?”  This is a real concern, and it does make it easy to back away from action, both on the part of the questioner and those who tend toward optimism.

All the negative news – from climate to politics to health and beyond – must be addressed at some point, but as we have learned, we're failing to do it at an intellectual or factual level. What truly works is personal connection, a thoughtful response coming from the heart.  Our world and humankind are in an existential crisis and each of us needs to feel that we can deal with our own – as well as others’ – concerns.

The Rotary Climate Action Team (RCAT) Network and our partner organization, the Global Climate Pledge (GCP), are offering a Climate Action Leadership Workshop on February 5, 2022 from 10:00 AM until noon Pacific Standard Time.  This is a chance for each of us to experience communicating about the climate crisis in a way that feels both comfortable and effective.

The purpose of this workshop is to support reaching out successfully to our friends, colleagues and other Rotarians. Perhaps one-on-one we can create a critical mass of Rotary clubs that can influence and speed the adoption of sustainable climate solutions.

The agenda for this two-hour session includes:

  • Purpose, agenda, groundrules, introductions
  • Very brief review of the climate emergency and Rotary’s response
  • Exercise: “Making it Personal”
  • Identifying your personal story
  • Resources and support
  • Action plan and next steps

As this workshop is all about your experience (there will be several small group breakouts), the session will not be recorded and whatever is shared we ask that you hold in confidence.  The “Making it Personal” exercise is the core of the workshop and is intended to help focus your experience of connection to climate issues and enhance your connection to others as you reach out and advocate for action.

According to the recent UN IPCC Report, humankind is at a tipping point and our actions MAKE A DIFFERENCE.  Please join me on February 5th and increase your connection to others at this important inflection point.
