COVID: Polio Déjà Vu?

The Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake has established a Polio Education Committee whose mandate is to expand polio education to a number of events during the year. Our kick-off event is October 19, 2021 and you are invited to join us (information below). We are honoured to host Dr. Richard Bruno, to speak to us virtually about Post Polio Syndrome, and the link between Polio and COVID-19.

Dr. Richard L(ouis) Bruno is internationally known as the world's foremost expert on Post-Polio Sequelae (PPS, also known as "post-polio syndrome"), the unexpected and often disabling symptoms that occur in 75% of paralytic and 40% of non-paralytic polio survivors about 35 years after a poliovirus attack.Bruno, a research and clinical psychophysiologist trained at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, began studying PPS and treating polio survivors in 1982, when he was a fellow in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1984, Bruno organized and is chairperson of the International Post-Polio Task Force, which promotes PPS research, education and treatment in 25 countries.

Bruno is now director of the International Centre for Polio Education, the new home of the International Post-Polio Task Force. He has received numerous honors for his work, including the New Jersey Pride Award in Health, inclusion in nine Who's Who publications and a Doctor of Humanics degree honoris causa from Springfield College. He also serves as adviser to post-polio support groups on four continents.

Please join us, either live or on Zoom, on October 19th, via video, at noon. Registration on our website will be available shortly. Please contact Barb Babij at: barbbabij@cogeco.ca with any questions.

In the meantime, stay safe.
