Sea Container of Food and Relief Supplies sent to RC of Chimoio Mozambique May 14/19

It was a relief (no pun intended) to finally get the sea container loaded May 14. The process was complicated by the language barrier (Portuguese) and the fact that we have never loaded a full container of food aid but with some creative thinking by the loading crew it finally came together.
At the request of our friends in Mozambique we agreed to purchase the sea container rather than rent. This meant that they could transfer the loaded container much further inland and unload it where the need was greatest – in Chimoio. Afterwards the container will get a new life in another Rotary project. When it arrives near the end of July it will benefit the central portion of Mozambique hardest hit by Cyclone Idai. Here’s what went in:
  • 21000 lb of dehydrated vegetable soup mix from Ontario Christian Gleaners (approx 700,000 servings)
  • 20000 lb of red kidney beans from Ferguson Bros. of St Thomas
  • 170 boxes of medical gloves, isolation gowns and masks from Warehouse of Hope in St. Catherines
  • 150 boxes of misc. medical supplies from Jean Aitcheson’s Stratford Depot
  • 600 layette kits for new mothers from Westover Ladies in Cambridge
  • 240 women’s menstrual kits from HUGS in Exeter
  • 150 milk bag mats from Living Hope Reformed Church in Sarnia

We will wait till this load has been distributed before considering what we can do to further assist the Rotary Clubs of Mozambique. Thank you to all in the District for your wonderful support and assistance.            Watch for our next container of school supplies which will load in Exeter July 13.If you would like to help contact Brian Hall at brian.hall@hay.net
