Dayton Finds Much Success with Early Act First Knight Program

You could hear a pin drop. That's no easy task in any elementary, but ... students at E. R. Richter Elementary were tuned in to hear if they had won a coveted award.

One by one teachers stood at the podium and read the virtues of the student they were nominating for the award, and once named, there were smiles and tears of joy as students walked forward to be inducted into the Early Act First Knight Gallery of Champions in the first ceremony of the year...

The ceremony capped off the students' participation in learning the first character trait, Discipline, over the last six weeks.

New Member Inducted in the Dayton Rotary
The Dayton Rotarians welcomed a new member to their club on Feb. 23, 2017. Ms. Rachel Caudill Ansley was inducted by long-time Rotarian, Bill Buchanan. Ms. Ansley works for Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center in Dayton.  Rotarian Ms. Kimberly Mulkey was selected to be Rachel’s sponsor and mentor. Also at the Feb. 23 meeting, Mr. Aaron Holbrook introduced Mr. Andy Conner as the weekly speaker. He presented a program over a short film that he wrote, directed and produced in 2015 called "Let There Be Light". The documentary deals with rural electrification in Texas, circa 1940 and was an award winning film. Andy is also a Dayton Rotary Club member.

Gumbo Fundraiser for Scholarship

The alarm clock rang early for a group of Dayton Rotarians and volunteers led by Rick Brown, Liberty County tax assessor-collector. Community leaders, businessmen and volunteers in the club on the cook team rose in the wee hours to fire up about five 25-gallon pots full of chicken and sausage gumbo in preparation for their annual lunch.

The Dayton Rotary Gumbo Luncheon funds from the day's work goes to underwrite scholarships for Dayton High School students.

"We should net profit around $3,500 after expenses and whatever we sold in walk-ins is profit over that," Hiller said. "We sold a lot of gumbo today."

Last year the group sold four 25-gallon pots of gumbo. This year they added a fifth pot and had very little left over.
