Literacy is important in all walks of life, but we don't often recognize its importance in a Democracy.........
When the abilities of literate citizens to read, write, think and comprehend are present in a high percentage of the population of a country this leads to success in a Democracy.  When there is much illiteracy with the absence of these abilities there is danger to a Democracy.
The success of a democratic government in the more literate countries of the world emphasizes the need for Literacy and Education beginning in childhood and continuing into adulthood where  decisions are made in our communities and at the Polls which    affect our Democracy.  And, this is where Literacy matters.
