From Youth Service Director Randy Hetherington:

In the next six months, the Youth Service Committee will focus their attention on the following five areas:

  1. Begin the Rotary Youth Exchange discussion and, if accepted, make application for 2014-2015.  All committee member input will be desired here BEFORE the motion goes to the Board.  So, feel free to email me your thoughts, concerns, supportive logic, or anything you have heard or think about Rotary Youth Exchange.  I will compile your remarks and that will form the basis of our one item agenda meeting.
  2. Secure attendees to all Adventure programs.  Do you know a youth in grade 10-12 who should be considering either the Rotary Adventure in Citizenship or Rotary Adventures in Technology program?  Please give them the encouragement to apply. They can get application info from Shari Roszmann and then she will take over the encouragement piece.  Mike Ryan is scheduled to speak at our January 9th club meeting and, if his new Adventure program gets rolling, we will pursue that as well.
  3. Secure entries in our 4-Way Test Media Arts competition.  Again, if you know a young person in grades 9-10 who strikes you as a strong student with a more global outlook than most, encourage them to contact me for information or their school contact person. The school contacts are Chris Shaw (Spruce Grove Composite High School); Stacey Johnson (St. Peter the apostle Catholic High School) and Keith Penner (returns in February) at (Living Waters Christian Academy).  We will need three members to be judges when the final products are presented to the Club in April.
  4. Participate in the Truth and Reconciliation Volunteer Event March 27th.  While I would love for a Youth Services person to put their name forward it can be any Rotarian in our club who would have an interest in being a part of this national event. Please let me know if you or another Rotarian is interested as soon as possible.
  5. Find ways for youth (including Interact) to be involved in our club events.  The timing of the school lunch hours and our meetings make it difficult for students to attend our luncheons without missing some or all of a class.  That said, the Interact faculty advisors have found a way that they can attend on their independent work days and we will see when those line up with our Thursday get-togethers.  Beyond their help with Lobsterfest, I am looking for ways to have the Interact members meet our Rotarians at least socially.  Ideas??  Please share them with me here.
