Highlights of the Pew Internet Project’s research related to social networking:  as of September 2013, 73% of online adults use social networking sites.
  • 71% of online adults use Facebook
  • 18% of online adults use Twitter
  • 17% use Instagram
  • 21% use Pinterest
  • 22% use LinkedIn
Wow!

So what are we doing as a Rotary Club to get in on this?

Like many Rotary Clubs, we do have a Facebook page (click here), but we only have 74 likes and we've never broken 100 in our reach.  Perhaps we should spend some money to boost our page?  Some of our members refuse to have anything to do with Facebook, but how can we ignore 71% of online users.

We do have a Twitter account (RCSpruceGrove), but we have never used it, mainly because I've done nothing more than create the account.

Personally, I'm on LinkedIn, but I don't really know how to use it for personal purposes (I'm not looking for a job!), never mind on behalf of the Club.

And I know nothing about Instagram and Pinterest.

So Andrew Hawkes has suggested that we need a well-thought out social media policy.  He has some background and training though his work; maybe there are other Club members out there with some experience and ideas.  It seems we would be crazy to not get more involved in social media, not when there are so many potential supporters and new members out there.

It seems that the next step would be to organize a committee to study options and consider such a policy.  I'm thinking we could do something in March.  Let me know if you are interested.

Meanwhile, let's think of the possibilities ...

This is my opinion and if you'd like to tell me what you think, please do so here.
