Alex Lavelle

Alex Lavelle landed his first big break in journalism at the London Daily Mirror in 1995 when Piers Morgan was editor.   He worked in several sports departments in Fleet Street before coming to Australia in 1999, having married an Australian.

He joined the sports department at the Age and after various editing roles became head of Age sport in 2011 and ran the Fairfax coverage at the London Olympics in 2012.

He was appointed news editor last year and following another Fairfax restructure and redundancy round was appointed editor of the Age in May.

He has four children, a wife and a dog and still just about manages to hold on to a golf handicap of seven.
