At our weekly meeting last Friday May 20, 2022, Past President Drew Pelger welcomed a group of roughly 30 Rotarians, both 'live' and on Zoom.

Unfortunately, our scheduled speaker, Jeanne Gural, E.D. of the Wilderness Center, was recovering from a tick bite, and couldn't join us. PP Drew did a phenomenal job ad libbing, asking each of the Rotarians in attendance what their classification is, plus some other questions to let the rest of the members know a little bit more about that member. (Editor's note: some of our more 'experienced' members provided a good bit of history of our club with their comments, including some humorous anecdotes. Ask Past President John Werren about the bird droppings on former president Jason McCoy!)

Secretary Paula provided this informative info (wait, is that redundant?):

This Day in History:

1862 - U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act that provided 160 acres of public land virtually free of charge to those who had lived on and cultivated that land for at least five years.

1873 - San Francisco businessman, Levi Strauss, and Reno, Nevada tailor, Jacob Davis, are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world’s most iconic garments, the blue jeans.

1927 – Charles Lindbergh takes off across the Atlantic in the Spirit of St. Louis on the world’s first solo, nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean which was also the first ever nonstop flight between New York to Paris.

1932 – Amelia Earhart leaves Newfoundland and lands near Londonderry, Ireland, to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

1990 - Hubble Space Telescope sends its 1st photographs from space.

Weird Historic Fact:

In 1310, for the first time, shoes were designed and made for both left and right feet. Previously, one shape was used to fit both feet. (Paula's question: how the heck does anyone know when that happened?)
