During the May 17, 2019 Rotary meeting, President Michelle Mullaly welcomed 59 members and 5 guests to the Zimmermann Symphony Orchestra Foundation Room. President Michelle then asked everyone to keep Rotarian Terri Barry in their thoughts and prayers. Teri recently underwent surgery and there was a "Get Well" card available for members to sign.
 
 
Rotarian Paul Hervey gave the Invocation.
 
Rotarian Gary Sirak won the 50/50 raffle, winning $51.00.
 
Club Secretary Suzette Matthews welcomed the following guests to the meeting: Lauren Capo (speaker); Jennifer Chora (Character Champ Scholarship winner); Victoria Phillips, Jill Singer (professional photographer & guest of PP Dan & Suzette Matthews); PP Denny Saunier.
 
The "Happy News" was given by the following:
  • Lynn Hamilton - In congratulations to fellow Rotarian & Past President Craig Young for his support of the Scouts Program. Craig's company was a major sponsor for this year's fundraiser "Good Scout Lunch" held at the Hall of Fame on May 16th;
  •  
  • Mark Rojek - In honor of the Rotarians who ran the HOF Marathon (PP Denny Fulmer, Raquel Raderchak and Suzette Matthews), raising $1,000 for the Run, Run, Run-raiser Backpack Program;
  •  
  • Bruce Schorsten - In recognition of President Michelle Mullaly's success in bringing great concerts to Canton Symphony;
  •  
  • PP Dan Matthews - To recognize all the Past Presidents in attendance that day;
  •  
  • Bill Maddox - To further thank & honor Michelle Mullaly for her leadership in bringing great alternative symphony events to Canton and for the outstanding 'Elton John & Billy Joel' tribute concert last weekend;

  • PP Rick Taylor - To celebrate the Cleveland Indians' bats finally coming alive!

  • PP Amanda Tietze - To honor all of the fellow Rotarians' businesses who won Repository 'Best of the Best' Awards;

  • Paul Hervey - in celebration of Perry High baseball team who won their 2nd play-off game;

  • Jerry Ortman - in celebration of his company, Canton Aluminum, being recognized with three "Best of the Best" awards. Congratulations Jerry and Canton Aluminum!
  •  
  • President Michelle Mullaly - to celebrate her oldest son graduating from Mount Union with a Biology degree. One down, two to go!
 
Co-Chair of the 2019 Canton Rotary Oktoberfest, Raquel Raderchak, gave an announcement regarding the September event and encouraging sponsorship considerations.
 
 
Rotarian Mike Brown presented the Character Counts Scholarship presentation. This year's winners were Jennifer Chora (pictured) and Andre Gillems (Andre was unable to attend the event).
 
 
 
 
 
Past President Rick Taylor took to the podium to thank Raquel Radershak and PP Craig Young for their volunteer time to work with  McKinley 9th graders on interviewing skills with Junior Achievement last week and to let members know of an upcoming Junior Achievement mentoring opportunity with 5th graders at Greentown Elementary School. 
 
 
May Speaker Don Peterson then introduced his speaker for the meeting, Lauren Capo. She spoke on efforts to screen newborns for Pediatric Congenital Heart Defects.
 
 
 
President Michelle concluded the meeting with the following announcements:
 
  • There is NO MEETING next week due to Memorial Day weekend;
  • The Rotary office will be closed from Thursday, May 23rd - Monday, May 27th. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday.
  •  
The following turned makeups: Mark Clendenin (Girard-Liberty); Past President Virginia Neutzling and President Elect Mark Rojek (Military Family Center).
 
The following will receive a makeup for attending the Rotary Scholarship "IF" Poem dinner at Benders on Tuesday, May 14, 2019: PP Dan Matthews, President Elect Mark Rojek, Vice President Drew Pelger, Treasurer Tom Clevenger and Rotarian Bill Griffing.
