At the weekly meeting on Friday, October 20, 2017, President Amanda Tietze welcomed the 55 members and 17 guests to the meeting. She asked everyone to keep Rotarian John DeWees in their thoughts and prayers and reminded the members to take the opportunity to sign the "Thinking of You" card for him.
 
Rotarian Jim Blake gave the Invocation.
 
Rotarian James Boggs introduced Dr. Adib and Elizabeth Barsoum from his old Rotary Club of Greensburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Barsoum and President Amanda exchanged Club banners. James said this about his friend, Dr. Barsoum, "Dr. Adib Barsoum is a well-known neurologist and is a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow. He was born in Egypt, but served as an officer in the United States Navy. He is one of the few people I know who has a mountain named after him (seriously). 'Mount Barsoum' in Antarctica was named after my friend Dr. Adib Barsoum; He served in Antarctica in 1958 as a Medical Officer at Ellsworth Station, a U.S. Navy scientific research center located in one of the coldest places on Earth."
 
Vice President Mark Rojek then welcomed the following guests to the meeting: Judge Craig Baldwin (speaker); Rick Hairston (guest of Mike Brown); Elizabeth and Adib Barsoum (guests of James Boggs); Debbie Roland (guest of Rob Roland); Victoria VanBuskirk (Congressman Gibbs office); Dan McMasters (guest of Mark Rojek); Bob Schaffner (ADG); Amanda and Liliana Pierce (guests of Tony Pierce); Paul Hervey (guest of Rob Roland); Emma Reardon (Character Champ); Dan and Amanda Reardon (guests of Character Champ Emma Reardon); Deontae McCollum (Character Champ); DeWanna McCain, Isaiah Wyatt and Vontiera Thomas (guests of Deontae McCollum).
 
The "Happy News" was then provided by the following:
  • James Boggs - Happy to have friends visiting from the Greensburg, PA Rotary in attendance today (*see above);

  • PP Craig Young - Happy that Young Truck Sales has been one of five truck dealers nominated for National Dealer of the Year;
  •  
  • Dennis Dent - Happy to 'see' his Rotary friends after his recent cataract surgery;
  •  
  • Raquel Raderchak - Happy to be back to Rotary from maternity leave;
  •  
  • Mark Rojek - Happy to learn that James Boggs is a talented saxophonist;
  •  
  • Dan McMasters - Happy to announce that his Massillon Rotary Club members are coming next week for the game day event (and threatened to dognap McKinley's mascot!);
  •  
  • Bob Matthews - Happy to discuss the upcoming Health Screen & Wellness Fair on November 18th. There are flyers for every Rotarian to take with them at the end of the meeting;
Rotarian Mike Brown then presented the October Character Champions: Emma Reardon and Deontae McCollum (*please see story above).
 
Rotarian James Boggs then took to the podium to remind everyone about the Friday, December 1st Salvation Army Kettle Bell Ringing. He stated he was in need of 3 more volunteers. (*Please see story above for the remaining Bell Ringing time slots).
 
Bob Matthews, Chairman of the Health Screen & Wellness Fair, reminded everyone to do their part in helping get word out for this event which will be held on Saturday, November 18th from 7 am - 11 am at Mercy Hall Auditorium.  There are flyers available to take with you. Please consider placing this flyer in your place of business, your church or anywhere you can think to make the public aware of this event.
 
President Amanda then took a moment to announce Polio Plus day is on October 24th. She stated a container would be passed around the room if you would like to make a donation. She also informed everyone of the upcoming One + One Rotary Foundation Gala Event scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 2017. If you are planning to attend, please let Lauri or Barb know. If you are planning to pay by check, please make your check payable to the Rotary Club of Canton.
 
Speaker Chair Rob Roland then presented the speaker for meeting, Judge Craig Baldwin, 5th District Court of Appeals and candidate for the Ohio Supreme Court. His topic of discussion was on the overview of Ohio's Appellate Courts.
 
President Amanda then concluded the meeting with the following announcements:
  • next week's meeting will be the McKinley/Massillon joint rally meeting at the Krassas Center. This will be a very large meeting so if you have not yet RSVP'd for yourself or your guest, please contact the Rotary office NO LATER than Monday, October 23rd.
  •  
  • Please consider wearing something red in support of the Canton McKinley Bulldogs.
  •  
  • Please register for the RI One + One Gala dinner event if you are planning to attend;
  •  
  • If you have not already done so, please sign the "Thinking of You" card for Rotarian John DeWees;
  •  
  • There will be a New Member Project Committee meeting immediately following the conclusion of the regular meeting.
