Meeting Notes -- January 9, 2024
Mountain View Rotary Club Meeting
January 9, 2024

President Tori reminded all of the Rotary International Theme: “Create Hope in the World.” Judy Crates led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Catherine Vonnegut shared a thought about a "word" that would describe hopes for the new year. Catherine's word for the year was "calm." She asked others to think of their word for their year.

Guests
Sanjay introduced Thida Cornes, school board member and prospective new Rotary Club member. Nellie introduced Michelle Bissonnette, Community Outreach Specialist for MVLA HS District.

Announcements
Bill talked about the upcoming crab feed fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, February 3rd, at the Mountain View Buddhist Temple. There have been several special planning meetings for this event. Bill circulated a list of tasks and assignments for members to select from. Tickets and posters will be available and distributed to members soon.

Alexander, Judy C., and Catherine made a presentation about the RYLA camp this year (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp). Two student spots have been reserved and paid for, for students representing our club. It was proposed that the two spots go to students from Mountain View High School and Alta Vista High School. There was support for this. The possibility of a 3rd student spot for a Saint Francis High School student will be investigated and the board will discuss funding for a 3rd student.

Scott asked for someone to volunteer to be speaker chair for the month of April. He also asked for a volunteer to help with this year's speech contest. Catherine volunteered to help with the speech contest.

Speaker
Nellie Meyer, MVLA HS District Superintendent and club member, gave a presentation on "MVLA Graduate Profile." This was a student-driven process that identified the District's vision for the 21st century student skills, character traits, and social/emotional make-up of a graduate. These included: Demonstrate deep & conceptual understanding; Think critically to solve problems responsibly; Build & maintain diverse, collaborative relationships; Contribute ethically & empathetically to our global community; and, Build resilience & embrace challenges. These ideas stimulated a lot of discussion and questions. Nellie was given a round of applause.

Closing
Tori thanked Nellie for her presentation and thanked all for attending. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Next lunch meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 16th. Nellie, also speaker chair for the month of January, announced that next Tuesday's speaker will be Mike Mathiesen who will give a construction update for the MVLA HS District.
