Meeting Notes -- September 12, 2023

Rotary Club of Mountain View

September 12, 2023

Scott announced he was again subbing for President Tori.  He reminded all of the Rotary International Theme: "Create Hope in the World." Our International call to action for 2022-2023 is "Imagine Rotary."  Our club's call to action is "Imagine Mountain View Rotary."

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Judy Hannemann.

Greeter & Thought for the Day: Since the program was going to be about insurance, Bert Raphael advised us to be careful how we fill out insurance and accident report forms. He gave a few funny examples of what not to write.

Visitors:  Walt Joyce introduced his wife Patricia. Judy Hannemann’s partner Tom was present with her, as usual. Yue Pang was attending in place of Mandy Andrei.

General Club Announcements:
  • We learned from Heather that Catherine’s husband recently passed away. Scott will get a sympathy card.
  • Fred Storek had to cut short a European cruise with his wife because of a medical problem with his leg. He returned to be treated at Stanford hospital.
  • Jim Cunningham is being treated for a major health issue.
  • Judy reported that all of the October speaker slots have been filled.
  • Scott reported on his work in a beer booth at the Mountain View Art and Wine festival. Our club (members and their families) had provided sixteen volunteers who staffed three booths.  See photos below.

Speaker:
Our member Walt Joyce told us about the “Status of Insurance offerings in California 2023.”
The major change is that due to the recent spate of billion-dollar wildfires, many insurance companies will no longer provide homeowners’ insurance coverage. Walt’s office can recommend a few good quality insurers who will still take new business, but probably not in remote or heavy brush areas.
There are some possible changes coming in employee health and benefit plans.
Some insurance companies are using “reinsurance” plans to lower their risks.
The cost of most other types of insurance has not changed significantly.
Contact Walt for more details!

Mark your Calendars:  Our Next Meeting will be on September 19 at Don Giovanni’s. We will hear about CSMA (the Community School of Music and Art).

Imagine Rotary! Imagine Mountain View Rotary!
