Why Attend Rotary International Conventions?

Posted by Sherry Sim
We celebrated Kathy’s birthday, had many Happy Bucks, Emily Campbell was named Rotarian of the Month, and DGE Sherry Sim gave an outstanding presentation on the Rotary International Conferences. It was mainly about the 11 that she has attended, including most recently, Melbourne, and she used a slide show and video that she put together with beautiful video and pictures! She was trying to recruit more members to attend since she has had such great experiences, but we do have Sherry, President Scotty McManus and PE Dave Nygren who will be representing our club. Our Rotary rides the wave!

Beach Clean Up Continues

Posted on Jul 08, 2023
Great monthly beach clean up for our growing club after the big 4th of July parade and celebration! Surprisingly, it wasn’t in that bad of shape… great job for the community, and it was great to have original charter member Jessica Peterson, past president Michele Lilley, President-Elect David Nygren and his girlfriend Amanda Woodgrift, Dale Kaiser, brand new transfer member Christel Chesney, and a slew of Cayucos Interact student club members from Cayucos Elementary to help this morning! We even had a guest from the Lake Arrohead Mountain Sunrise Rotary club, Norbert Loewen, help us out today because he was in town visiting Dave.

This short video shows the work of New Life K9, a 501c3 organization that Cayucos Rotary has supported since its inception. This Rotary year, Cayucos Rotary donated $2,000 to the organization to support their training of K9 to help veterans and first responders with PTSD challenges.

The organization is also working with California Men's Colony where inmates are recruited to help train the puppies. Training usually takes a year. The dogs bring hope and purpose to the inmates, who are less likely to relapse into infractions and the result is less taxing on the taxpayers. Credit : photos are from NewLifeK9 FB Page.

Supporting Cayucos Harvest Bag

Posted by Sherry Sim on Apr 08, 2020

Cayucos Rotary has donated $5,000 to support Harvest Bag operated by Cayucos Community Church. For the past 10 years, Cayucos Community Church has been providing bags of food to families in need. Each bag, estimated to be worth about $20 in food, contains milk, bread, eggs, tuna, butter, peanut jelly,  macaroni and cheese, and some produce like tomatoes, potatoes and onion etc. About 48 bags are given out daily; or to approximately 48 households.

Terry Bettenton, church member who's been helping with the program over the years stated "Today is a good day as each household is getting a bag of groceries, a bag of produce and a bag of a frozen chicken. These came from the Food Bank today". Terry shared that about 35 persons came to get food last week.  With more filing for unemployment, Terry expected more families in need, as the numbers had been growing daily from 35 to 44, 46 and 48 today.

In lieu of our usual Rotary meeting, Cayucos Rotarians visited the new sewer plant facility at Toro Creek and were educated on the progress and goals of the Sanitary District. Cayucans are proud of the Cayucos Sanitary District's hard work on the new sewer plant, which is due to be completed in October 2020. Construction is slated to cost about $25 million ~ under budget. It's exciting that Cayucos should be able to disconnect and operate independently of Morro Bay by early 2021. A 10-year plan is in place to create a recycling water plan - water from toilet to tap. President-Elect Steve Geil gave us an update on what's secured and needed for upcoming Masquerade on March 28. Everyone was happy to give their Lincolns. President Lars presented the original title certificate to 2019 golf cart raffle winner, Sophia Smith of Cayucos, who's expressed interest in Rotary.

After committee reports, Greg Bettencourt and Mike Baxter representing the Cayucos Land Conservancy shared CLC’s history and how the Conservancy has been preserving land and uniqueness of Cayucos. CLC’s current project is the acquisition and preservation of part of the Toro Creek parcel from Chevron, costing about $4.75 million. Community contributions to the sum of about $350,000 will be matched by generous local donors to meet the $750,000 needed in community support. To help, please contact the Cayucos Land Conservancy 805-995-2046.   Next general meeting is on Thursday, Feb 6 @ 7am at the new Cayucos Sanitary District's Office on Toro Creek.

Trained Service Dogs Help Veterans with PTSD

Posted by Sherry Sim on Jul 18, 2019
Great program featuring New Life K9's training of service dogs to help veterans and first responders with PTSD.  Jack Gould, President of New Life K9, based in San Luis Obispo, shared that Cayucos Rotary was the first service club to support their program. The program has expanded to include inmates at California Mens Colony to help train the dogs, which helps to reduce the cost of training. Not only are veterans and first-responders with PTSD helped, the inmates get a chance to be rehabilitated and avoid relapses, which in turn, results in savings on funding prisons.  Cayucos Rotary presented New Life K9 with a $2,000 check donation to support their program.

""Peace begins with a smile,
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.
Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.
Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.
We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.""

Let's us smile with our hearts as we serve together.

Cayucos Rotary is leading the way to support the site improvements, building of new facilities and refurbishment at Rancho El Chorro Outdoor School.  At Cayucos Rotary's meeting on Thursday, we were hosted to a delightful breakfast by San Luis Obispo County Education Office in a specially-built VIP tent with  beautiful hillside views.

County School Superintendent Dr. James J. Brescia shared how the ground where we were had been cleared for building of four yurts, and vision for new facilities to educate and serve our young 10 years and younger from now till hopefully 45 years more.  President Steve Geil presented the opportunities on how Rotarians could make a difference on the young ones and teach ethics to the youths, and transition them to be Interactors ("young Rotarians" in high school).

Gladys' potato salad was a hit, quiche featuring homegrown veggies, delightful baked beans, yummy shrimp cocktails, plus sweet lemon bars, chocolate birthday cake and more were relished till empty plates were left.  Of course, what's a social without wine and beer....and we couldn't have a better setting by the blue ocean and crashing of the waves....

Holidays come to Cayucos

Posted by Gladys Bird on Nov 30, 2011

The holiday spirit is alive in Cayucos as the merchants prepare for the annual community wide Christmas Party to take place on December 9th.  In addition to being able to shop for all of those one-of-a-kind beautiful and unique Cayucos treasures on that day, visitors will find many fun activities including face painting, a visit from Santa, and two horse drawn carriages to keep you in the spirit of the season.  This is an event not to be missed!

We received a wonderful overview of EcoRotary from their President as he explained the club’s commitment to the reuse-reduce-recycle programs.  They help sponsor a park and golf course in Morro Bay to keep them at zero waste.  Much of what the club does is educate people in how to clean up our environment.  EcoRotary partners with Rotaract and Interact.

District Governor Wade Nomura spoke at our 10/27/11 meeting and inspired us all!  Where do you find that AHA Rotary moment?  Wade’s first was in Mexico while doing a water project.  Water, the most basic of all human needs and our ability to provide that need, and having the recipients give you that big THANK YOU.  Yes, AHA moment!  This is why we are in Rotary!  Wade provided more insight into his experience with Rotary opportunities to serve humanity and the Rotary moments received in return.  What a delight it was to listen to Wade speak!  If you have never experienced Wade Nomura’s speaking gift, seek it out.  You will be glad you did!

Speaker Victor Montalban, son of late actor Ricardo Montalban, gave insight into the intriguing life of the much beloved film star who we enjoyed in a wide variety of both big screen and television credits, everything from Mr Roarke in Fantasy Island to Star Trek ll: The Wrath of Khan to Spy Kids.  The actor was not someone who had things handed to him, rather was one who worked long and hard to achieve his goals.  He was very proud of his heritage, of Spanish descent, born in Mexico City, then came to Hollywood to make his fortune in acting.  Victor is one of the actor’s four children now retired and enjoying life here on the Central Coast.

Buy Local Fish!

Posted by Gladys Bird on Aug 10, 2011

Speaker, Lorie French, is in the commercial fishing industry here in Cayucos where they currently fish for black cod, also called black sable.  She had rope to show how lines are tied, knotted, and hooked.  Lorie informed us of the need for all boats to have an observer on board at all times to ensure rules with the Nature Conservancy are observed.  She and her husband are, at heart, crabbers.  She produced a crab trap, hand made by her husband, used to trap the crabs we enjoy in our restaurants.  It is hard work, but they love the life.  Bottom line, BUY LOCAL FISH!

  • Liz W and Sherry went to the Group 11 international service meeting.  Looking for $8,000 funding.  Matching grant proposal presented.
  • District Governor will be coming on October 27th to visit and to exchange flags.  All members are encouraged to be present and support this exciting and important event.
  • Liz G introduced Bill Callahan, District Manager for the Cayucos Sanitary District.  Bill enlightened us on the important current state of the sewer plant issues, critical to all of us, since the plant is jointly owned by Morro Bay and Cayucos.  He explained that it is past time to update it because every time it rains, there are problems, including infiltration.  A new plant needs to be build, oddly enough, according to studies, a smaller one than the existing one, but the one of the big issues is where to place it.  The next meeting will be at 6:00PM, 2nd Thursday in August at the Vets Hall in Cayucos.  Everyone is encouraged to attend to have your voice heard, however, sooner than that, you should go online at www.morro-bay.ca.us/ to get involved.

  • Judy Salamacha, visiting Rotarian and today’s guest speaker.  Judy is a writer who came to the Central Coast eight years ago from Bakersfield.  Here she joined the Morro Bay Rotary of which she is now a past President.  One of Judy’s passions is the spelling bee at Cayucos Elementary School, which she was instrumental in getting started.  She would love to see our club in the audience when they hold their spelling bees, as it adds another level of interest and excitement to have more than just parents in attendance when they are competing.  Another huge passion is the Central Coast Writers’ Conference which she is intensely involved with.  It will be held 9/16-17, anyone can attend, even if you want to self publish.  The cost is only $139.  There will be an amazing array of writers on hand during the workshops to learn from.  Flyers were distributed.
  • Meeting adjourned 8:00 AM.
