Rotary Club of Santa Clara

Weekly Club News Update!

5/20/2015

The Club’s Polio Plus campaign kicked-off at last week’s meeting as our own Suds Jain was the speaker. Suds shared his story as a victim of the disease and treatments he endured as a child. He also provided information on the origins of polio which dates back several centuries, it’s occurrence in the United States, the efforts to develop vaccines that prevent the disease, and the eradication campaigns that started in the late 1930’s. Rotary International has played a huge role to eradicate Polio globally through the Polio Plus campaign. In 2013 there were 416 Polio cases reported all of them located in three countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria where it has been difficult to vaccinate all children.

Suds will be manning the information booth at this year’s BBQ where donations to Polo Plus will be accepted. It is estimated that it will cost $5.5 billion to complete the eradication of the disease globally but would save $40-$50 billion over the next 20 years.

At the meeting John Keane the Chairman of ShelterBiox USA spoke briefly about the shelter boxes and thanked the Club for the generous donation of funds following member contributions in support of relief efforts resulting from the Nepal earthquake.

Easy Perez is doing much better following removal of a cancerous tumor. The doctors feel they removed all of the cancerous tissue but Easy will be on chemotherapy for the next several weeks. We all wish Easy the best and please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

This year’s Scholarship Recipients were presented at last week’s meeting. Two students from Santa Clara High, one student from Wilcox High, and one student from New Valley High will each receive a $2000 scholarship award for each year they are attending college for up to four years. The students typically attend a community college for the first two years.

Next week the meeting will be held at John Bertolotti’s warehouse not at the Bay Club. John will give us a tour of his antique auto collection. If you haven’t already done so, please let us know if you are bringing a guest as space is limited. Directions will be forthcoming. Also remember that the following week (June 4th) the meeting will be held at the Elks club as it is the Past President BBQ. Ted Keech is the MC for this event and he said he will be covering the great Past Presidents of the Club. More information will follow.

See you on Thursday.
