Rotary Club of Santa Clara

Message From President Steve Rainbolt

Weekly Club News Update!

Ever wonder if any of those stars we see at night might be similar to Earth? Puragra Guha Thakurta, also known as Raja, an Astronomer with the University of California Santa Cruz was last week’s special guest speaker and he tried to shed some light what is happening out there in deep space. Actually, he described events that took place millions of light years ago as it has taken that long for light from distant galaxies to reach Earth’s observation telescopes. The Hubble telescope, launched into orbit around Earth in 1990, has been a main source for gathering data used to study distant galaxies, determine the age of the universe (about 13-14 billion years old), and support theories about how stars and planets are formed. Raja presented, in layman’s terms, how galaxies form and evolve as well as what cosmic events must take place to potentially create an earthlike planet.

Police Chief Mike Sellars reported on funds raised for purchase of classroom supplies for schools in the Santa Clara Unified School District. To date over $2500 has been raised. Congratulations to all of you for your contributions. The presentation of the gifts will be on October 16, 2014 as part of District Governor Ed Jellen’s Club visit.

Please remember that The Rotary Foundation (TRF) drive for 2014-2015 is underway. Make your donation check out to Rotary International and either mail them to the Santa Clara Rotary Club, P. O. Box 111, Santa Clara, CA 95052 or bring the check to a meeting and give it to Ted Moorhead, myself or Miles Barber. Donations are tax deductable. The "Greatest Rotary Club in the World" should have no problem achieving 100% participation.

This week we will get an update on what is happening in Santa Clara as the city’s Mayor, the Honorable Jamie Mathews, will the speaker. This is your chance to be enlightened regarding the state and future of the city of Santa Clara.

See you all on Thursday.
