Club Members Consider Riverfront Development Options
Our 2nd Century Planning Committee has been working with the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department and Riverworks to develop projects that could be supported by our club. Rotarians David Bennett and Jason Daenens presented the three ideas that have emerged for consideration:

Overlook structures on the Harrison Street Bridge ($180,000)The current design calls for multiple overlook structures on the Harrison Street Bridge facing west. Because much of the activity will occur between the Harrison Street Bridge and the Wells Street Bridge, for certain events these structures will become prime viewing areas.

Children’s recreation area on the North Bank ($300,000)
This space, to be located on the north bank of the river just to the west of Harrison Street, will be designed to appeal to younger children. Equipment and ground protection will be developed with safety in mind. It is the intention that the playground equipment be accessible to children with a wide range of abilities. The design will also allow kids to slide down from the tree canopy trail onto the playground.

Water jet fountain on the South Plaza ($200,000)
The fountain would be to the east of the Compass Pavilion and constructed with some type of water jet foundation. As this area is adjacent to an area designed to attract children (a freshwater miniature canal), these fountains will likely be designed for children to play in during warm weather. The designers are also considering some type of active colorful lighting to enhance the attractiveness of the foundations.

Information on the proposed areas was distributed for table discussions. Members were given time to share thoughts on the “Pros” and “Cons” of each option, to rank the projects, and to report out to the group. Attendees were reminded of the criteria for project selection: 1) high visibility, 2) promotion of the Rotary name, and 3) within the club’s budget. Rotarian Barb Wachtman reported that a fundraiser is being planned for February 28, 2017. Open to the public, the event emphasizes food and fun (as it will take place on Shrove Tuesday), and that the featured meal would be served over the noon hour as well as during dinner time. More details are forthcoming, including how Rotarians can sample the food to be served that day and of the call for each club member to sell at least five tickets. Other sources of funding for the chosen project include club foundation dollars and the possibility of matching money.

The comment sheets and project rankings from each table discussion at Monday’s meeting will be tabulated and shared back to our entire club. There will also be a survey for club members to complete so that all input can be gathered and next steps taken.

Congratulations to Our Newest Paul Harris Fellow!
Randy Rider, chair of our club’s Rotary Foundation Committee, recognized member Jason Daenens on being honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for the fifth time! The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. Congratulations Jason!

October’s Student Rotarian Recognized
Stephanie Veit, Student Rotarians Committee Chair, introduced Janaya Woehnker from North Side High School who has been our Student Rotarian for October. Janaya is senior class president, serving also on student council and as vice president for the school’s National Honor Society. She is considering University of California-Los Angeles and Indiana University for post-secondary studies. Her career choices include genetic counselor or epidemiologist. Janaya shared highlights of a number of projects North Side is supporting in our community, including Canstruction Fort Wayne (Community Harvest Food Bank), blood donations to the Red Cross, and the school’s annual Christmas Party for Kids Surviving Cancer and their families. Best wishes Janaya!
