Tim Jorstad, CPA

Working for Rock 'N Noll Legends

Tim has been a CPA since the 1970’s and has had his own firm in San Rafael since 1985.  He has also founded and held the title of Chairman of not one, but two, community banks in Marin County.  As part of his CPA practice he has developed a very unique niche of acting as business manager for just about any rock music band associated with San Francisco you can think of-- the Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, John Lee Hooker, the Doobie Bros., Journey, the Greg Kihn Bank, Jefferson Airplane and the Jefferson Starship.

Don’t miss what will be a fascinating talk on how he established his business, and what life is like at home and on the road with these music industry legends.

Meeting Highlights July 21, 2016

Meeting Highlights

Newest Member and Red Badger Lorenzo Dueñas takes in the ambience of this full house meeting/celebration of Del Raby's 90th Birthday.

Steve Amend accepts spouse Kathleen's birthday cookie and greeting from President Merle.  Kathleen and Steve are looking forward to their sons visit from as far way as NYC to help mom celebrate.

Why is Kent Seegmiller smiling so broadly?  He is YOUR new "Recognition Master", aka fine master.  Armed with his presidentially provided pan of collection, Kent will be visiting everyone soon with his hand-pan-out for your $$ "recognitions."

President Merle wears the look of satisfaction as her third meeting of 50 draws to a close.  Her thought for the day?

Who knew 90 could look this good?  An obvious reference to Sunriser Del Raby on reaching his ninth decade!

Del Celebrates 90

Sharing the same year, 1926,  with other luminaries, Jerry Lewis, Fidel Castro, Marilyn Monroe and John Coltraine, Delbert, "Del" Raby, born in his parents Grass Valley home, Del was raised in Chico California.  His character was formed within his parents nurturing, service-oriented lifestyle centered around their Salvation Army ministry.  "Doing the Most Good" was his family's guiding principle. Del began his college education at Chico State as a Forestry major with a Business minor.  Interrupted by World War !!, Del returned to school after serving in the Army and completed his education with a degree in Youth Services.  Wanderlust got a hold of Del and soon he was in charge of Boy Scout camp programs in souther California, including Catalina Island's Cherry Valley jewel.  His assignment areas included northern California's Stanford Area, and his longest standing tenure at Camp Oljato on the shores of Huntington Lake near Fresno California.

Helping toast and gently roast Del's ninetieth birthday were four scouts he mentored as counselors at Camp Oljato:  Steve Wilhite, Doug Aitken, Larry Simone and Paul Kruger.  Each described a different dimension of Del's leadership development style.  Unanimous was their consensus on Del's integrity.  Also described as gracious and compassionate, Del's reputation was even reported by a scout from the Philippines who had heard of Del's deemed mythological qualities.  Confident, demanding, Del led by example  He inspired commitment as Steve Wilhite described, after being recruited through just a phone call to organize and supervise one of the camp's most difficulty activities:  Water Safety, the same job Del had taken on years earlier, and now whose name identifies the waterfront building.

Steve Wilhite, Larry Simone, Paul Kruger and Doug Aitken stand poised to honor Del's Scouting Camp contribution at Camp Oljato, including his encore stint following retirement!

Del receives well wishes delivered by President Merle from Sunrise members.

He even got a personal cake from President Merle.

Doug Aitken points out a Camp Oljato memory in the PowerPoint presentation.  No doubt Del recalls it too!  Doug credits Del with helping him develop his team building, collaborative skills.

Sunriser Randy Seelye recounts meeting Del in Spain while he was participating in an archaeological dig.  They had intended to attend a Rotary meeting to help keep Del's now over 53 year perfect attendance streak going.  When now other Rotarians appeared, Randy, his wife and Del declared their own meeting and celebrated with their own dinner meeting.

Longtime friend and Past President of Santa Rosa Sunrise Archie Julian, shared how Del redirected a lost damsel-in-distress in Jed Smith State Park while on a scouting outing.

Fellow Eagle Scout Michael Polkinghorn honors Del.  Michael's father Fred is President of Valley of the Moon Rotary.

Scouting colleagues were joined by visiting Rotarians including Barbara Spangler of Valley of the Moon, and District 5130 District Governor Nominee 2018.

Helaine Campbell and spouse Bruce attended.  Bruce and Helaine are both Past District governors in this District, 5130.

Erna Stevenson, from Napa, PDG 2007-2008 offered congratulations.

Valerie Hulsey, District 5130 Administrator from Valley of the Moon Rotary extended greetings.

District Governor Bob Rogers of Sebastopol and friend from Napa send Del "Thanks" for his ongoing work to promote the ideals of Rotary and see Del has proof positive to both Be Prepared and Serve Above Self.

Rolf's PHF

Rolf Wessman Meets Paul Harris

Steve Zwick presents Rolf Wessman with his first Multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

Friday evening Sunrise Rotarian Rolf Wessman received his Paul Harris Fellow plus one recognition at a reception on his just remodeled patio deck.

Presenting the distinction was fellow member Steve Zwick.  Acknowledging Rolf's support to the club and his interest in the "International" nature of The Rotary Foundation, Steve reminded those present of Rolf's multi-national connections:  Swedish by birth, raised in Spain, lived in Ireland.  Rolf's father was a Rotarian.

Listening attentively to Rolf are L to R his cousin Magus (visiting from Sweden) Betsy Randolph, Max Childs, President Merle Hayes, Carolyn Anderson Foundation Chair, and not shown are Steve Zwick, George Reeves and Rich Randolph.

St Francis Movie Night

Waiting for "The Candidate"

Above, Membership Chair Marty Behr awaits the arrival of Robert Redford's appearance in the 1972 Academy Award winning film "The Candidate."

Robert did appear, portraying the California candidate for U.S.Senate, Bill McKay.  Marty arrived at St Francis Winery very early, and with the help of Marina Gatchet, Eloise Tweeten and Rich Randolph, secured excellent seats for the dusk showing.

Joining the moviegoers were Marina's friend Michael (he packs a great picnic), Jack Strange, Carolyn Anderson and hubby George,  Betsy Randolph, Cindy Gillespie and friend.  From Marty's fine spiced chicken, Michael's chocolate and strawberries, Betsy's cheese and exclusive St. Francis wines for those so inclined, an evening under a full Valley of the Moon moonrise, sated everyone's appetite, say nothing for the fans of Robert Redford, 44 years the younger.

For the film historians, the Oscar was for best Writer, and one scene was filmed in Santa Rosa's own Howarth Park!

Sonoma County History Moment

Santa Rosa Highlights in History

As you drive around Santa Rosa today try to picture the history that shaped this town. There are many buildings that survived the 1906 earth quake still in use. Santa Rosa was named after an Indian maiden that Padre Juan Amoros baptized on the feast of St. Rose of Lima in 1829. Today it is the largest city in California north of San Francisco. The original inhabitants were the Pomo Indians. The valley in which Santa Rosa lies was plentiful with Grizzly Bear and Blacktailed deer. The Pomo took advantage of the wonderful fishing and hunting. The rivers were teaming with rainbow trout and salmon. The Pomos must have felt as many people still do today, that this area is a little piece of Heaven on Earth. A famous Botanist, said ”This is the chosen spot of all the earth as far a nature is concerned.”

Santa Rosa’s first Spanish family was that of the widow Maria Ignacia Lopes de Carrillo. Her family consisted of 9 children. After traveling from San Diego she was granted a parcel of 8,000 acres located at the head of the Santa Rosa Creek. Tensions grew between the local residents known as “Californios” and the Americans. The U.S. wanting to acquire the piece of land Known as California, sent General John C. Fremont to establish an American stronghold. By that time, however, most of the Spanish speaking families had vacated to Sonoma. Settled by Missourians and Kentuckians, Santa Rosa became very pro-Confederate during the Civil War. A strong Union town to the south east was known as Petaluma. The San Francisco and Northern Pacific Railroad reached Santa Rosa and the population exploded. That area remains today and is known as Old Railroad Square.

Questions:

1. Where is the Carillo Adobe located today?

2. Who was the famous Botanist?

Stay tuned for more History moments.
