The sensational story behind Transcendence's Broadway Under The Stars award-winning concerts in Sonoma Valley A Performer and the co-founder of Transcendence's Broadway Under The Stars will share the miraculous story that led the group of Broadway artists from the lights of Broadway in NYC to the beaches of Mexico, and then to the vineyards of Sonoma Valley to help save Jack London State Historic Park and establish a permanent home doing award winning concerts in Sonoma County. Stephan is proud to serve the Sonoma County community as the co-Executive Director, Chief Marketing Officer, and co-founder of Transcendence Theatre Company. Known best for its award-winning Broadway Under The Stars concerts, Transcendence has the distinction of having helped save Jack London State Historic Park from closure while contributing over $267,000 to the park in the last five years. Stephan’s performing career has been highlighted by his time on Broadway in “Mary Poppins,” originating roles in the pre-Broadway premiere of “Memphis,” singing an opening act solo for Frank Sinatra, headlining an opening act for Rita Moreno, and working with performing legends on and offstage including Dick Van Dyke, Kristin Chenoweth, Barry Manilow, Martin Short, Jason Alexander, Sutton Foster, Rebekah Luker, Conan O’Brien, and more. Stephan can be seen on almost any given week somewhere in wine country singing for a non-profit cause, pet shelter, concierge group, senior living center, or service group in support of taking life and art to new levels of transcendence. Rebekah joins Transcendence as Marketing Coordinator with a background in both theatre and business. Since graduating from SSU, she has spent her days in the business world, while continuing to perform locally in shows such as THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (Millie) and LITTLE WOMEN (Jo). Having volunteered with Transcendence for the last three years she is thrilled to be on staff full-time. She currently lives in Santa Rosa with her family. |

Economic Development Board

Ben Stone was appointed as the Sonoma County Economic Development Board Director in 1986. Over the last 25 years he has been responsible for various economic development activities. Examples of programs and improvements for the local business community that the Economic Development Board has led include, California’s first employer‐driven workforce strategy; a new Business Assistance Hotline service; a new Foreign Trade Zone designation for Sonoma County. Mr. Stone also managed the County Tourism program for seven years, spinning it off with new funding sources as the Sonoma County Tourism Bureau; developed the initiative and action plan to develop the School of Science and Technology at SSU; developed the nations’ first county-wide ag marketing program; developed the nation’s first all-volunteer small business assistance center and garnered the funding to spin that program off as an SBA-‐funded Small Business Development Center, which is now co-located at the EDB office; developed the SCORE business assistance program in Sonoma County; and other initiatives to support economic vitality here. In addition, Mr. Stone initiated and developed the North Bay World Trade Association, the North Bay Technology Roundtable, the Commonwealth Club of Sonoma County, the World Affairs Council of Sonoma County, the annual Sonoma County Restaurant Week; the annual Craft Beverage Conference; and the Green Business and the Healthy Business recognition programs. He received his Bachelors Degree at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington and his Masters Degree at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. Ben Stone has also served on numerous Boards over the years. He has served as Chair of the Business Administration Department Advisory Board at Santa Rosa Junior College, as a Board Member of the Sonoma County YMCA, the International Diplomacy Council, Chair and Board member of the North Bay World Trade Association, National Alumni Board of Whitman College, the Sonoma County Museum, currently serving on the Board of the Swiss‐California Foundation, the California Local Economic Development Association, and the California Academy for Economic Development and the President’s Council at the Santa Rosa Junior College. |

Sustainable Egg Farming

Bryan Boyd is the unwavering force pushing egg farming into the future through his labor of love: Wise Acre Farms. To say that Bryan enjoys a challenge is a disgraceful understatement. This man was born to push the envelope and think out of the box… or, as the case may be, the coop! And yes, he is a local boy… born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. He was a member of the first graduating class at Elsie Allen High School and helped build the tennis courts still in use today. Bryan was born into a family of small business owners. His grandfather founded Able Fencing in 1959. His father eventually took over the operation and Bryan worked with him for 17 years. Building and installing fences allowed Bryan to learn how to work hard and why to work smart. He also learned craftsmanship and integrity from working in the family business. But didn’t we already say that Bryan likes a challenge? He found that challenge in applying to the police academy. He worked his way through the program and graduated with honors in 2007. Which of course led to him becoming a chicken farmer… huh? Well that’s what happened. He and his girlfriend, Raina Brolan, moved to a property with room to spread out in Windsor and they started a new hobby — raising chickens. Unable to resist the temptation to address the challenges in raising his chickens, he started thinking up new ways to do things more efficiently and humanly. Inventions ensued, logistics were adjusted and there was a lot of research and welding and building and happy chickens. What was initially a hobby became Wise Acre Farms and a chicken farmer was born. |

Game night is a fun event for all members and guests. Bring your favorite game or just bring yourself and play other people's games. No skills required. This gathering qualifies as a Fireside for you Red Badgers (check that box).
We are asking everyone to bring some food to share as well. Think dinner or heavy appetizers since we are gathering at 6pm. We will eat and socialize for awhile, then bring out the games. If you are not really interested in the games, please come for the fellowship and stay as long as you like.
It will be helpful to have a head count. A sign up sheet will be circulated this week and next.

Giles Beeker is a multi-faceted business and real estate development professional. Presently working with Santa Rosa-based developer Hugh Futrell Corporation, Beeker leads acquisition, development, and programming activities in hospitality and mixed-use projects for the firm. Prior to moving back to California, Beeker led the development and programming team for the largest building in Washington DC. Totaling more than three million square feet, the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center is owned by the U.S. Government, however, the legislation that created the project requires that it serve as a public building with public spaces managed by a private sector company. Beeker worked within a partnership formed by Fidelity Investments and Urban Retail Properties to plan and manage the public space- over one-million square feet- and meet the Congressional mandate that the building serve as an "International Trade Center," a catalyst for the redevelopment of Pennsylvania Avenue, and an asset for residents, tourists and government workers. Beeker developed business plans to create a large conference and event business line, lease office space to businesses involved in international trade, operate a large public food court with visitor services, develop and produce programs to bring together U.S. Government agencies involved in trade promotion or regulation and US companies trying to increase export activity, and to provide basic property management services to the facility. On acceptance of the business plans by the U.S. Government, Beeker was hired by the partnership and became the project’s senior executive for nearly 14 years. Earlier in his career, Beeker led a Los Angeles-based consulting team focused on the wine, food, and hospitality space. Assignments included development and management of all hospitality events for Coca-Cola at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, a wine industry modernization and brand development program for the Republic of Macedonia, and financial due diligence supporting the sale of California Pizza Kitchen. Beeker also managed marketing and sales in the Western US for Kobrand Corporation, a leading wine supplier and importer, and served in corporate and field management roles for Bel Air Hotel Company, Raleigh Enterprises, and Hyatt Hotels and Resorts. Beeker has held governance and leadership roles in industry, government, and affinity organizations, including as delegate to the World Economic Forum, representative to the President’s Export Council, board director of the World Trade Centers Association, British-American Business Association, American Institute of Wine and Food, and as president of the Sommelier Association of California. Beeker was granted a bachelor of arts degree at Christ Church College, University of Oxford and Master’s Degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Beeker lives in Saint Helena, CA with his wife and two sons. |

Santa Rosa Symphony

Alan Silow has been Executive Director of the Santa Rosa Symphony since July of 2002. During his tenure, the Symphony has returned to a fiscally sound basis that has produced surpluses in both operations and endowment annually for 15 years. Silow played a leadership role in the public/private partnership with Sonoma State University to build a new world-class symphony hall that opened in Fall 2012 where the Santa Rosa Symphony is now the resident orchestra of the Green Music Center. He also currently sits on the Board of the Santa Rosa Convention & Visitors Bureau to provide better cross-cultivation between the arts and tourism. Silow’s accomplishments were recognized with a nonprofit leadership award for innovation, community engagement and growth given by North Bay Business Journal in October 2012. Silow graduated Phi Beta Kappa with an undergraduate B.A. degree in Economics with Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs. He is married to a lovely and talented university professor, with one son who currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He lives in Oakmont.

Brian Ling is the Executive Director of the Sonoma County Alliance – Business Advocates for a Healthy Economy, Community, and Environment. The Alliance is a membership organization of over 360 Businesses, Individuals, Corporations, and Non-Profits within Sonoma County. Brian is also a property manager and licensed real estate agent for KOR Commercial and Residential Real Estate in Cotati. Previously, he was the CEO of the Reliance group of companies; a manufacturer and distributor of Heavy Duty Trucks and Trailers for the transportation industry. At its peak, the Reliance companies exceeded $110MM in annual revenue and reached employment of 400 employees in the Western U.S. Brian is a Sonoma County native, 4th generation Californian, and has always been very active in the local community. When pleasure time allows, he can be found golfing, fishing, and enjoying beautiful Lake Tahoe. Brian graduated from Cardinal Newman H.S. and has a B.S. in Industrial Technology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Brian is currently active with the following business and community groups:

Dr. Martins is the former founder and CEO of the Cape Leopard Trust, a successful predator conservation NGO based in South Africa. He has over 20 years of field experience having worked in wilderness areas throughout much of Africa, Saudi Arabia and the USA. Quinton turned to studying predators in 2003 and completed his PhD “The Ecology of leopards in the Cederberg Mountains, South Africa” and is considered the world’s leading expert on Cape mountain leopards and a skilled predator trapper. A few years ago, he began looking at large mountain cats on a global scale, and has worked with researchers on mountain lions in California and Nevada. Quinton is passionate about the environment and finding innovative ways to conserve it; also being somewhat of a conservation entrepreneur, generating funds for conservation in a sustainable manner. He has a particular interest in determining the role of predators in the ecosystem and their use as flagship species for broader environmental conservation – connecting people to the environment and finding ways to mitigate conflict between humans and predators. He has a deep reverence for wilderness, rugged mountains and the role nature can play in shaping our lives. Quinton is a research associate and fellow at Bristol and Stellenbosch Universities. |

Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Sunrise Progressive Dinner Saturday, March 25, 2017 Plan is for each member with spouse/guest to have soup/salad at one home and entree at a second home with different members, then dessert/coffee all together at a third location. Success depends on getting enough members to volunteer their homes to host either the soup/salad or entree course so that no more than 6 people are at any one home. Members hosting are expected to participate in all three phases of the progressive dinner. If not enough homes are available, we sometimes have to go to 8 people at a sitting. Food for both soup/salad and entree courses is catered. Host/hostess to provide table service, possibly liquid refreshments with meal (wine, coffee, etc.), but no after-meal coffee or drinks or dessert. Host/hostess is requested to pick up their food between 2:30 and 3:00 on Saturday of the event, or make arrangements for someone to do it. Please no later than 3:00. Timing is very important and the following times are suggested: Home #1: Soup/salad catered for 6 people, guests to arrive at 5:30 PM. (Participants announced the day before the event) Home #2: Entree catered for 6 people, guests to arrive at 7:30 PM. (Participants announced at soup/salad home) Location #3: Dessert/coffee for all members and spouses/guests at a convenient location, everyone to arrive at 9:00 PM. (Location announced at entree home) Rules of the game: Do not expect to have first and second courses with the same members. The idea is a mixer, and your other dinner companions to remain unknown until announced by mail before the first course, and at the first course for the second course. Single club members welcome to invite one guest, or come as a single. Please do not invite guest couples, or a third person, or involve children. Dan Needham began his career with 18 years at Hewlett Packard in a variety of engineering and management roles. He is now the CEO of the Earle Baum Center of the Blind (EBC), formerly serving as Chief Operating Officer since 2012. EBC serves people with sight loss with training, counseling, social, and recreational programs helping them be active community members and reach new goals. Mr. Needham co-founded two technology companies, TriAccess Technologies and Brevidia as Chief Operating Officer and CEO respectively. He is an active Rotarian, past president of his club, and has served over 10terms on the board. He taught at the Santa Rosa Junior College for 17 years. Mr. Needham has served on and led boards of various nonprofit organizations (philanthropic, arts, and social) and for-profit companies. An avid open water swimmer, Dan was the first man under 40 to swim from Alcatraz over 100 times. Mr. Needham earned an MBA from Golden Gate University, a Master of Engineering from Cornell University, and a B.S. degree from UC Berkeley. Bob's journey into the low-vision world began in January, 2004. While driving on the freeway on the outskirt of Sacramento, he suddenly lost a significant amount of his vision as a result of myopic degeneration. Shortly after this incident and while still transitioning into the world of low-vision, he had the wonderful experience of participating in a tandem bike ride with the Earle Baum Center. This memorable experience will always help serve as a springboard to him in fully embracing blindness. Bob's professional background has included starting and operating his own insurance benefit business, running an investment retirement planning practice, and building a manufacturing business. For the last ten years he has been actively working for Guide Dogs for the Blind in their nationally recognized development department. He has had the good fortune of being actively engaged in all aspects of their planned giving and major donor operations. He has also been actively involved in board leadership for two local nonprofit organizations. |
