These are the numbers so far this year (as of a week ago). At the time this was published, it had been 21 weeks since the most recent case was reported. So far this year only one case in each of the two remaining endemic countries - Afghanistan and Pakistan.It will be ten years after the last reported case before the world will be declared polio-free.
We really are getting close to keeping our promise to the children of the world. It appears the end to this long endeavor might be on the horizon - but still a long way off.
Immunizations are critical in the coming years to insure that cases do not resurge from undetected environmental risks.
