Rotary News Today
September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month

Basic education and literacy is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus. In 1985 Rotary declared basic literacy to be a pre-condition to the development of peace.

Rotary’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. Sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate.

Rotarians are encouraged to raise awareness of literacy issues and to organize literacy projects at home and abroad such as our shipping of school supplies to Haiti and South Africa and our dictionary program in London.

“The 2014-15 Hon. Ray Lawson Rotarian of the Year” Award Nominations

The purpose of The Honourable Ray Lawson ‘Rotarian of the Year’ Award is to recognize a member of the Rotary Club of London who is/has been highly involved in Club activities and may have also been active in Rotary District 6330 activities.

Each member is invited to make nominations for this prestigious Award.  All Rotarians can make nominations.  This Award is open to all members of our Club except any Board Member who sat on the Board of Directors last year and previous winners (John Stuart, Jim Belton, John Eberhard, Brian Carroll, Bob Earley, Bob Black, Jack Scott, Jack Little, Keith Morrow, Bruce McGauley, Jan Delaney, Don Stevens, Rick Coates, Warren Granger, David Brady, Randy Harden, Elizabeth Harris, Marilyn Neufeld).

The Nomination Form can be found on our registration desk or on our Home Page under “Home Page Download Files”.  Please download and forward the Nomination Form by email to Past President Michele Parkin, michele@uwo.ca, with your choice for this prestigious award, the reasons for that choice, and Michele will present her recommendation to the Board at its 21 October meeting.

Volunteer opportunity at the Running & Reading Club
Start2inish is really excited about the launch of the Start2Finish Running & Reading Club at Woodland Heights, a program in which our Club is partnering with Start2Finish. The Running & Reading club will launch at Woodland Heights on Wed Oct 5th, 3:30 – 5:30pm. They would love to have Rotarians on the ground with us as mentors and role models for the children who participate in the Running & Reading club at Woodland Heights. There will be 60 children participating and they try to have a 3 to 1 ratio of children to adults. With so many of the children delayed in literacy by 2 to 3 grade levels having a high number of coaches is effective.

To volunteer or to obtain additional information please contact Michelle Wray, Director of Volunteer Relations at 905-319-1885 ext 204.
