Wayzata Rotary Club - Past to Present
Club History
Conversations between Walter Baskerville, Minneapolis Rotary, and Donald Dickey over a pot of coffee, or whatever they brew during a fishing trip, were directly responsible for the organization of our club. It being quite obvious that there was a need in Wayzata for a service club, it was only natural that Walter should sell Dickey on the idea of Rotary. If Rotary could not succeed here, then the future was indeed bleak for an organization in Wayzata which could pull the business and professional men together and hold them so.
The first organizational meeting was held on May 4, 1948 with 19 of an invited list of 24 prospective members present. After having explained to them just what Rotary was, all but one of those present voted to apply for a charter. Wayzata Rotary charter number 6957 was granted on May 24 and became a provisional club until July 28 when formal presentation of our charter made us a bona fide member of the greatest and oldest family of service clubs in the world.
Starting with 20 members with the thought in mind of taking things slowly the first year and laying a solid framework for the future expansion of the club, the club ended the first year with a membership of 24, and an active club which "is certain to be instrumental in the well-being of Wayzata".
Today, Wayzata Rotary looks a little different from 1948, as women were included in membership beginning in 1988 and since then have had an active role in leadership of our club. Our membership today consists of over 65 members dedicated to service and fellowship. Our members have remained steadfast in their dedication to being instrumental in the well-being of Wayzata. Our mission has expanded to include projects world-wide whether initiated by Rotary International or by members of our own club.
