THE INTERNATIONAL CORNER

What is the International Service Committee up to these days?  Our long-time colleagues and friends from the Bombay Rotary Club approached us to assist with one of their signature projects, the Little Hearts Pediatric Surgery Program.  They are currently helping destitute slum children with congenital heart defects (who usually don’t even have access to doctors) get heart surgeries totally free. This is done through a cooperative agreement among one of the largest hospitals in the city, two Rotary Clubs in Mumbai and several other international clubs.
Since the program’s beginning in 2016, over 200 children have received critical surgeries, which saved many young lives.  For most youngsters, this also represents a huge positive change:  growth, activity level, weight gain, and overall well-being improves dramatically after cardiac correction, particularly in very blue babies and those with large holes in the heart.
There are currently thousands of children throughout India who cannot afford this kind of surgery and many of them die.  We are happy to assist our long-term partners in Mumbai and several other international Rotary Clubs in this worthwhile effort.
