Another busy week with lots of action!    Inductions, students and a very entertaining speaker.

The Rotary Club of The Woodlands inducted five new members this week.  Past President, Terry Brown inducted Kay Boehm-Fannin, Alexa Horak, Roy David, Daniel Guerra and Ken Mayfield.  Welcome to our newest members.

Laura Meyer and Heidi Mays were recognized as Outstanding Students for not only being strong students but also participating in athletes and the arts.  Both also have special needs siblings at home that they help with in addition to all of their school work.  Congratulations young ladies.

Our speaker today, Stan “The Man” Curtis, grew up on baseball being raised in the shadow of the Nation’s Capital.  Later in his life, while employed with Shell Oil he had the opportunity to visit a number ballparks but it was after retirement that he up’d his game and has written a boom, “Covering All The Bases – A Fan’s Quest to See a Game in Every Major League Ballpark”.

A self-proclaimed baseball nut, Stan has been to 54 baseball stadiums in his life, supporting 30 baseball teams.  He shared his stories about…
•             His first World Series in 1966.
•             How he got into stadiums for events like Cal Ripken setting a new record, without a ticket
•             His visit to the new Yankee Stadium - $10 for a pair of tickets 16 rows behind home plate, usually priced at $175 each

He has been to seven different World Series, five All Star games and has even thrown out the opening pitch at an Astro’s game in 2005.  His greatest enjoyment has been the opportunity to visit with players and coaches and meeting the people behind the scenes.

Lots of questions from the audience:
•             Thoughts on Astrodome?  Preserve and make it a museum for Houston as a whole, from its industries to its sports.
•             Most memorable play that you have seen?  1986 – 3rd game of Astro’s series with Giants, Mike Scott throws no-hitter
•             What park has your favorite feature?  The Green Monster at Fenway and the new Camden Yards
•             Best ballplayer seen?  Ted Williams

What is his secret to talking his way into these situations?  He is patient . . .  but very persistent.
