Stories
The Rotary Club of Conroe was founded August 24, 1932. This year we will be celebrating the beginning of our 86th year of service to our community and the world. Locally, we focus on literacy through our "I Like Me" Books for all 1st graders in the Conroe High School feeder elementary schools, our sponsorship of Runyan Elementary Schools. We also sponsor the Interact Club at Conroe High School and a community Rotaract Club for young adults. You will find us involved in dental programs for children, Montgomery County Scholar-Athlete Awards, scholarships for Conroe High School and Lone Star College Montgomery County students. We are leading the way in raising funds to provide all law enforcement officers in Montgomery County with our Sporting Clays Tournament on November 2nd. |

Tuesday, February 28th, the Rotary Club of Conroe listened raptly Obie Shaw, a fitness expert from Beaverton, Oregon, talked about the sorry state of American fitness. Despite continuing efforts to improve America's physical fitness that have been going on since the Eisenhower administration, we continue to fall behind. Mr. Shaw urged us to forget the idea that exercise should be fun and to think of it as work. Work being an idea that Rotarians can wrap their heads around. Instead of trying to exercise for 30 minutes 3-5 times a week, one needs to exercise 20 minutes everyday. That way there is no room to bargain with yourself about what day you will exercise next. |
Each year in Rotary is unique. The year begins on July 1, and ends on the next June 30. Each and every part of Rotary International changes on each July 1, from Rotary International down to each club. Each year, also, the President of Rotary International sets an agenda for the whole world of Rotary, its international Zones, Districts, and individual Clubs. For the clubs, the President of Rotary International promises to recognize those clubs that successfully carry out the programs the President of RI wishes to emphasize. The annual requirements are broken down into the four Areas of Service of Rotary International: International Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and Club Service. The clubs that complete these requirements receive the Presidential Citation from the RI President as “Balanced Club Achievement.” Our club has received such recognition for these years: 1996-1997 2004-2005 1997-1998 2005-2006 1999-2000 2006-2007 2000-2001 2007-2008 2001-2002 2009-2010 2002-2003 2010-2011 2003-2004 2011-2012 The Presidential Citations are the circular badges sewn on to the Club’s banner that is set behind the podium before every meeting. Our club has also received two additional special citations: in 1996-1997 the Club was recognized for it’s per member contributions to Polio Plus, and in 2004-2005 (the Centennial Year) our Club was recognized for its Centennial Community Project. Those awards are the white badges sewn onto the Club’s banner. |
Continuing Programs
Our club has always focused on the needs of children
everywhere. Programs vary over the
years, but these are the programs that have continued over the years: Dental Program. For
over thirty years, our club has provided free or low-cost dental servicer for Conroe
school children whose families are financially unable to obtain dental care necessary
to relieve the severe pain their children have to endure. As a result, these children are unable to
participate in their classes or in school activities. School nurses know to “Call Rotary” when they
encounter a child suffering from such pain. Mentor Program. Each
school year, Rotarians volunteer to serve as mentors for students attending
Runyon Elementary School. This school
serves one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in Conroe. Each participating
Rotarian meets privately with a child who requested a mentor. Each mentor may talk with, read to or just play
a game with their assigned child to help that child meet and handle his or her
problems. At least once each year, the mentor’s children visit the Rotary Club
at one of its weekly meetings. The Club
also supports the School Library at Runyon Elementary with weekly donations of
books. Interact Club at Conroe High School. This club is now one of the largest and most active
clubs in the school. As often as
possible, the Interactors visit the Club at its weekly meeting, and Interactors
and Rotarians work together on service projects. |
