There are three components to the cost of the trip. Travel within Cuba is $2,500, including most meals, all lodging, internal transportation, and airfare between Miami and Havana. (Single supplements are available for approximately $360.)  In addition, travelers will need to book flights from California to Miami ($500 +/-), to arrive by the 19th of October for the departure to Cuba on the morning of the 20th. Finally an additional $500 tax deductible contribution, that will applied in its entirety to the project, is required in order to make a reservation.

About a year and a half ago, several Cupertino Rotarians, including Teresa Erdman, were fortunate to meet with and get to know Cuban doctors Cardenas and Selman, when they were visiting the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.  Doctors Cardenas and Selman are pediatric heart surgeons at the William Soler Pediatric Hospital in Havana, Cuba.  The William Soler Pediatric Hospital serves critically ill infants and children in Cuba’s 15 provinces, plus other Latin American countries, including Bolivia, Nicaragua, Peru and Venezuela. During the course of their visit to the San Francisco Bay area, we learned the hospital’s cardiac unit had a critical need of ultrasound probes for coronary procedures.  This equipment is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of infants and children with heart conditions.

Teresa became the champion for Imagethis project and proposed that the Cupertino Rotary World Community Service Committee support it.  Together with other Rotary Clubs, we have successfully raised $21,250 of the $40,000 necessary to purchase the medical equipment. When the added benefit of a $500 donation from each traveler on this trip, the project will be sufficiently funded to provide the needed medical equipment.
